Doogie Howser

Yup, my new doctor is fresh out of medical school. I don't think the ink on his diploma is dry yet. He doesn't look a day over 18. Lets just hope everything is still fresh in his mind and he is still willing to learn (two traits the old, alleged doctor didn't have). My appointment was for 9:30AM but The doc didn't arrive at his office until 9:50 and I discovered I was only one of, at least, three patients with a 9:30 appointment. I was shown into the examination room at 10:10 but neglected to check the time when Dr Howser actually appeared. He has an accent, which wouldn't be too bad but he mumbles as well. He took my blood pressure, wrote a prescription for my blood pressure and allergy meds and sent me on my way. It took me seven minutes to drive home where I arrived promptly at 10:45. My guess is that I was waiting in the exam room for about 20 minutes. Not taking into account the fact that I arrived ten minutes early, I figure I was cooling my heels for an hour. I blame the old doctor. I suspect he was accepting new patients right up until the day he retired. The poor new doc is swamped. It takes over two weeks to get an appointment with him. He is not accepting any new patients at this time and currently has a waiting list of 34. I didn't get a great impression from this new fellow but I didn't see him for very long so I will reserve judgement for future visits. For now, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

My new doctor, who I was really excited to have, has left already.
I only saw her twice. Have to make another appt with the replacement
doctor, had to cancel my first one because the weather was so bad
that school was closed that day.

Dr Duck retired to Okotoks. I hope you don't get him as a locum.

It's important to connect with a doctor I think. I did once --- I miss her terribly.

I did once too. He was the doctor who delivered my DD#2. We saw him for two glorious years. Ah, those where the days.

Hour wait times in the lobby and triple booked appointments if pretty standard here in central California and very often you don't see the MD you see the nurse practitioner or physician's assistant. I am a nurse, I don't need to see another nurse. Most of the "good" doctors are the old school ones and they are retiring. I don't know if socialized medicine works any better then private fee system but since there are so many people on state programs where I live the "good" doctors don't want to practice here as their reimbursement in not as good. Either way it all comes down to $$$$$

I live in a small town, we only have a satellite clinic here. If I want to see anyone other than a nurse practitioner, have to drive 45 minutes to the nearest city.

My doctors, especially the specialists, know that unless I am told of a delay I will only wait 15 minutes after my appointed time to SEE them in a patient's room---it works very effectively--we have too many doctor choices here for them to act independent.
As a P.S. I like the younger, newly educated doctors over the older ones who think they know it all!

Unfortunately, we have a shortage of doctors here. The only doctors accepting new patients are the crud of the crop. All the decent doctors have long waiting lists that they won't even put your name on if you're not a newcomer to town. (if more people would walk out after 15 minutes I wouldn't have to wait an hour.)

Now if I had a doctor like Doogie I will be glad to wait for him.All I get is old men.Doctor that is.

It is nice to have a portable hobby. I always take a book.

If I'm going to have to wait an hour at each appointment I'll be taking my knitting every time.

When we got down to Florida, Ed and I made some inquiries and wound up with a 40-something internist who took an hour with each of us on initial visits, so he could get to know us. That is remarkable. We are lucky. Since he spends quality time with each patient, he often runs late, but he is worth it.

My doctor is like this. He explores every possibility.

Nevada is talking about enacting a law that to require a prescription for what are now over-the-counter sinus/cold meds. I shudder to think of going through all that rigmarole with the doctor just to get some Dayquil or Nyquil.

My cold would be long gone by the time I got in to see my doctor.

You are probably correct in thinking that your old doctor was booking in patients for the new one to check.
The new doctor is presumably 'still testing the waters' of his new practice - bound to take a little time for him to get into his routine.
I hate it when you take the time to be 'on time' - and end up waiting though - very annoying. I usually sit there and think of what I could have been doing if I had left the house, say a half hour later . . . like 'snoring'
