Striped Hoody




This cute little sweater is knit top down with the hood added on.

SIZES: Directions are for size 1. Changes for sizes 2 and 3 are in parentheses ( ).

CHEST SIZE: 20" (21" and 22")

FINISHED CHEST SIZE: 21 ½" (22 ½" and 23 ½")

MATERIALS: 2 85g skeins of variegated, worsted weight yarn

1 50g skein of solid colour, worsted weight yarn

1 pair 4mm/5 1/2US needles

1 pair 5mm/8US needles

4 stitch markers

4 stitch holders

5 buttons

NECKBAND: With 4mm needles and solid colour cast on 54 sts. (58 sts, 62 sts). Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1 inch. Change to 5mm needles and variegated colour. Work as follows:

SHAPE RAGLAN: Row 1: K 8, inc 1 st in next st, put a marker on needle, K 1, inc 1 st in next st, K 4 (5 – 6), inc 1 st in next st, put a marker on needle, k 1, inc 1 st in next st, k 18 (20 – 22), inc 1 st in next st, put a marker on needle, k 1, inc 1 st in next st, k 4 (5 – 6), inc 1 st in next st, put a marker on needle, k 1, inc 1 st in next st, k 8. (Stitches between 1st and 2nd markers form left sleeve; stitches between 3rd and 4th markers form right sleeve.)
Row 2: Purl, slipping markers.
Row 3: *K to within 1 st of marker, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker, k 1, inc 1 st in next st. Repeat from * 3 times, k across. Repeat last 2 rows 10 (11 – 12) times.Next Row: Purl 150 (162 – 174) sts.Divide Work: K 21 (22 – 23)sts, place these sts on a holder (left front); k 32 (35 – 38) (left sleeve); place next 44 (48 – 52) sts on a holder (back); place next 32 (35 – 38) sts on a third holder (right sleeve); place last 21 (22 – 23) sts on a 4th holder (right front).

LEFT SLEEVE: Cast on 2 sts, p across, cast on 2 sts. You now have 36 (39 – 42) sts. Dec 1 st each side every 8th row 5 times to 26 (29 – 32) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 6" (6 ½" – 7") from underarm or 1 ½" less (cuff allowance) than desired sleeve length, dec 0 (1 – 2) sts on last row to 26 (28 – 30) sts. Change to 4 mm needles. With solid colour, work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 ½". Bind off loosely in ribbing.RIGHT SLEEVE: With 5 mm needles, cast on 2 sts; from right side, k 32 (35 – 38) sts from sleeve holder, cast on 2 sts. You now have36 (39 – 42) sts. Work same as left sleeve.BODY: Slip sts of left front onto 5 mm needle; join yarn at left underarm, cast on 4 sts. K across back sts, cast on 4 sts, k across right front sts. You now have 94 (100 – 106) sts. Work even in st st until piece measures 5 ¾" (6 ¼" – 6 ½") from underarm or 1 ½" (ribbing allowance) less than desired length. Change to 4mm needles. Working with solid colour, work in ribbing of k1, p1 for 1 ½". Bind off loosely in ribbing.

CENTRE BAND (BUTTON SIDE): With 4 mm needles and solid colour cast on 5 sts. Row 1: K 1, p 1, k1, p1, k1. ROW 2: P1, k1, p1, k1, p1.

Repeat the last 2 rows until band is the same length as the front of the sweater. Cast off. Place pins, evenly spaced, where buttons will be stitched on.CENTRE BAND (BUTTONHOLE SIDE): Make same as button side but make buttonholes corresponding to position of pins.

To Make Buttonhole: on a Row 1; k1, p1, k2tog, k1. On a Row 2; p1, k1, inc 1 st in next st, p1.

HOOD: With 4 mm needles and solid colour, cast on 67 (69 – 71) sts.Row 1 (right side): P 1, *k 1, p1, repeat from * to end of row.Row 2: K 1, * p 1, k 1, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows for 3", ending with wrong side. Change to 5 mm needles and variegated yarn. Work in stocking st until piece measures 7" (& ½" – 8") from start. Bind off 10 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind of remaining 47 (49 – 51) sts.

FINISHING: Stitch button and buttonhole bands to front edges of sweater. Fold hood in half; weave back seam, keeping seam flat. Fold hood’s ribbing in half to right side. With ends of hood 1 ½" in from front edge of sweater, sew hood to neck edge, easing in hood. Sew sleeve seams and underarms. Sew on buttons.

Tassel (optional): Cut a piece of cardboard aprox. 3" wide and length of desired tassel. Wind yarn the desired number of times around the length. Cut the yarn, leaving a 6" long end and thread through darning needle. Slip needle through all the loops on the cardboard and tie the yarn tightly at one edge. Slip off the cardboard and wind the yarn several times around the loops ½" from the fold. Draw the needle through the top and sew the tassel in position. Cut through the other fold and even off the ends.

Tension for the Striped Hoody is: 18 sts X 23 rows on 5mm needles = 10cm square.

Now that I am working on my first sweater and have the back done, I am feeling very confident I can knit more wonderful things than dish rags. We'll see. I have to finish the sweater first.
