Paramount Theatre Review

DH and I went to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie this week at the Paramount Theatre. We don't go very often, maybe once every three to five years.:o( DH doesn't have much interest in television so you can imagine what it's like dragging him to a movie theatre. It's been so long since we went to a movie DH asked for two adult tickets at the window and I had to point out that we are both seniors according to the price list posted above the window. We attended on Monday night. The thought of popcorn swimming in some sort of artificial oil no longer appeals to me and DH is not a snacker at any time of the day or night so we quickly walked past the snack bar and into the theatre proper. As soon as I stepped off the lobby carpet I felt my shoes stick to the painted concrete floor. We walked down the aisle with our shoes making little velcro sounds with each step. I made DH choose which row to sit in so he couldn't compain about it later and as we walked to the centre of the row I could see mybloggers popcorn wedged where the seat folded up againt the back. We found two seats that looked relatively clean and sat down but DH said his feet were in a big sticky spot so we moved over one. Now my feet were in a big sticky spot but I figured once the movie started I wouldn't notice. As far as I know there are no matinees on week days. I want to know where the cleaners were on Monday and how often they hose off the floor. It was truely disgusting. The movie started but I couldn't keep my feet still. It was like having something caught between your teeth and you keep poking at it with your tongue. The sticky floor, thoughts of what I might be sitting in and concentrating on not touching the arm rests were very distracting during all but the most thrilling parts of the movie. Also, I'm looking forward to loosing more of my hearing so the volumne won't be so deafening. I give the movie a B+ but Port Alberni's Paramount Theatre gets an E.

The movie was GREAT! I didn't see the first one but people were saying this second one was better.

I think the theatre is probably cutting corners on its maintenance because its attendance is down. Go-to theatres are on their way out. I haven't been to a movie since 2001 or thereabouts. Think I saw Gladiator. I just rely on TV showings now and never see any new releases. My friends all swear by Netflix. I don't know how it works or if it's available in Canada. But it gives you movies at home that are new releases and not on VCR or DVD but on screen. Now that you have a new popcorn thingy, maybe it's time to research on movies.

That would be that last time I set foot in that theater. Ugh! But honestly, I can't tell you the last movie I saw in a theater. I think it was "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" in 2001. My latest thing is to screen them on my wide computer monitor. And my snacks are better, too.

Sadly, it's the only one in town. Think I'll go have some veggies and dip.

Too bad the theater was filthy. It would be a rare treat for me to see a
movie. Alice in Wonderland was the last one I saw.

It's a treat for me too. Next time there's a good movie showing I'll probably have to ask DH out on a date of dinner and a movie, my treat.

Add "out of focus" picture, and you know why I don't do movies (besides the fact they're 90% crap).

Our little, old theatre has gone digital so I suppose that takes care of the "out of focus" problem.

I haven't noticed that in the theatre we usually go to in Vancouver but of course I'm sure we pay much more for our tickets than you. Also, the vancouver theatres still think that you must be 65 to be a senior.

I'm sure you do but I don't think the ticket price should have any bearing on the cleanliness of the theatre.

Ewww! Yuck! I can't stand sticky. As I get older, I find those kind of things bother me quite a bit more.

If I can figure out how to reconnect the DVD player I'll be renting my movies from now on.

I hate when that happens!!

I always went to the late show and assumed the mess was caused by the disgusting early show people.

I hate the sticky floor business too. Maybe I'll bring a piece of cardboard to put under my feet once I'm seated. Of course I'll stick on the way in. But Jude Law is waiting for me.

After we got home DH actually went back outside to slide his shoes across a patch of moss by the back door. It was really gross.

I'll avoid that theatre then!
