Boxing Day

As I understand it, Boxing Day is so called because it was the day after Christmas when the socially elite would box up last season's fashions and generously give them to their servants and other underprivileged people. I'd look it up on Wikipedia but I don't feel like it just now. Boxing Day is not a statutory holiday although there is no mail delivery, no newspapers, specialty shops are generally closed and offices like accountants and doctors, to name a few, are closed. Boxing Day/Week Sales, the closest we come to the USA's Black Friday, are rampant. However, the only items on sale are those few things in stock that weren't fit to be purchased as Christmas gifts. I actually went to a Boxing Day Sale once. It wasn't worth it.

I hope everyone had a pleasant Christmas. Mine wasn't too bad considering I have the flu. I thought it might be a touch of food poisoning from Christmas Eve festivities but I'm into day two of digestive upset so it must be flu. I feel so crappy I haven't knit a stitch in a day and a half.

I am supposed to be at my Mom's visiting with family today but I didn't think they would appreciate me bringing flu germs along so DH took DD#2 and her brood instead.

Can't think of anything else to say.

We missed you at Mum's on Boxing Day and I hope you are feeling better by now. It was great seeing DD#2 and her family. Great kids and the little girl is a real cutie. We returned to the island yesterday and I'm looking forward to a few days of R&R, although we did buy a small turkey which I'm cooking today. I miss having leftovers for sandwiches, etc.

hope you get to feeling better soon. Niece's in-laws had something similar and had to skip dinner at brother Bubba's .

If you looked it up on Wiki, you'd have found it says what you said about Boxing Day. So sorry you have the flu. I decided that I had a touch of it with my cold (and I'm not just saying that to steal some of your thunder), and that explained why all I wanted to do was stay in bed and read for 4 days. I was starting to worry that I was never going to have any ambition ever again. Sending get well wishes.

It is nice to know the true meaning of boxing day. I always thought it
was for boxing up Christmas decorations. Do take care of yourself, the
flue is not a bit of fun.

I sure hope you feel better soon! I always wondered what boxing day was. Thanks for letting me know. Sounds like a great tradition... out with the old, etc.

this year is the first time south australia that boxing day is celebrated with a holiday , in the past we had proclamation day 27th december the day south australia came in to being in 1836. this year owing to all the large stores complaining about not having boxing day sales as other states do , the govenment caved in and swapped the holiday

I have a headache from wine, and feel sick from the food, but other than that, xmas was okay here.
And there is some very good stuff on sale for boxing day. No, I didn't shop today.

So sorry you are still struggling. Hope you feel better soon. I never knew what Boxing Day was and always imagined it had something with guys hitting each other in the ring. And why it was honored the day after Christmas, therefore, was an even greater mystery.
