Patience is a Virtue

I have always thought of myself as a relatively patient person. I don't mind sitting in waiting rooms, I don't mind standing in long checkout lineups and I don't mind too much when DH is late (picking me up, dropping me off, home for dinner....). The point is, I thought I'd be fine when it came time to order my new spinning wheel. I'm not. I have finally decided on a natural finish, single drive, Ashford Traveller spinning wheel.

I have e-mailed seven dealers on Vancouver Island and Southern BC looking for the best deal. Of those seven, only five have answered my questions. The remaining two I will phone tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Once I decide who I will make my purchase from I can place my order and then there will be more waiting as I don't think anyone has what I want in stock. It will probably be at least six weeks before my wheel arrives from New Zealand. Then as "natural finish" translates to bare wood I will need to stain all the pieces (lots of assembly required). When the stain has dried I want to personalize it by painting some flowers or something around the wheel. Then I will need to lacquer it so the paint doesn't chip off with wear. Then I can assemble it and I might actually get to use it before next winter. Now I just want to get the ball rolling. Who said patience is a virtue? Bah!

Impressed with your skill for this project. I never assemble anything if I can help it.

Sounds like a very big project you've got lined up for your new spinning wheel, but I know you will enjoy every minute of it. It will be a work of art, and I hope you will keep us posted on every step of the way.

I'm not good at waiting for stain/lacquer/paint to dry, but sounds like it'll be worth it.

Wow! Can you order it directly from New Zealand?

Not exactly. I ordered it from a dealer who orders it through her supplier who orders it from New Zealand. No wonder they're so bloody expensive.

I'm not very virtuous either.

I love it that you know just what you want and, as long as it takes, it will be worth it. The spinning wheel is such a beauty, au natural! What color stain are you thinking of?

Medium oak stain on silver beech hardwood.

I am probably one of the most impatient people around and I really admire
your ability to fix your spinning wheel right once you get it. It is a
work of art in itself.

I made the mistake of getting a lacquered wheel the first time. When I decided to personalize it I discovered I would have to sand the lacquer off before I could paint on it. Also, it is easier to paint on an unassembled wheel than one that is moves every time you touch the paint brush to it.
