Kool Wool

I had a blast yesterday, dyeing some commercially spun wool with Kool Aid.

I'll be selling these little beauties at the Crafter's Market.

Absolutely gorgeous colors; and to think you do that with kool-aid! Remarkable.

Interesting, but I'll stick with more "manly" things (no offense).

Very pretty. Lucky are the crafters that will be going to that fair.

My favourites are the peach and the turquoise.

Such pretty, pastel colours fo the warmer days ahead. Was the commercial wool origanally white? Dyeing is fun, and full of surprises

It wasn't bleached white. It was more of the natural, off white.

It makes beautiful yarn. How do you set the color?

I forgot to mention, Kool Aid (acid dyes) will NOT dye cotton or acrylics.

The citric acid in the Kool Aid sets the colours in animal fibres and nylon. When I use commercial dyes or food colouring I add some vinigar to the dye bath.

Nobody is going to be able to resist (little pun) those lovely colors. How did you make that hand-paint looking one in the bottom center?

I was envisioning the whole skein stretched back and forth across your house so you could go along painting sections of it blue. Wouldn't the cat love that!

I filled a glass casserole dish with hot water, added 1.5 teaspoons of strawberry Kool Aid, stirred to mix and added one skein of yarn (presoaked for 30 minutes). Then I shifted the yarn around in the bowl so it would be sort of evenly dyed and then I sprinkled some ice blue Kool Aid on top and nuked it for 2 minutes. Let it rest for 2 minutes. With tongs or chop stick (wool is now hot) gently lift and turn the skein and sprinkle some more ice blue on it. Nuke it again for same amount of time and let rest for same amount of time. Just keep repeating until all of skein is, sort of, evenly sprinkled. There's a bit more to it if you want to actually try it. Let me know and I'll give you step by step instructions.
