I've Only Just Begun

Earlier this year I was contacted by a young lady in Australia. She had seen my lace shawls on Etsy and was wondering if I could replicate a shawl for her. Her Great Grandmother had knit the shawl from a pattern in a magazine from 1945. I don't know when she made it but the young lady did tell me her Great Grandmother passed away about 20 years ago. She needed to have her precious heirloom recreated because she had taken it to a dry cleaner and they ruined it. She sent me this photo of the shawl:

I almost cried when I saw it. I hope the dry cleaner gave her a nice settlement and fired the idiot who destroyed such a beatiful heirloom piece.

I was fortunate that she was able to find the original pattern amongst her Great Grandmother's things. Last month she e-mailed me a copy of the pattern and I ordered the yarn I would need. I've run into a few minor problems with the pattern but I basically have it memorized now and the knitting is coming along nicely. This is what I have done so far:

Half of the first border. I've stretched it out a bit so you can see the lacey pattern.
Only three and a half borders, the centre, the coat, bonnet, booties and diaper cover to go. I will post more as I complete more of the pieces.

Damn! Either the shawl's yarn was disintegrating already, or the cleaners "cleaned" it with a few razerblades tossed in. Very cool that they had the pattern and the person who can recreate it.

This is great -- she found you just in time. She will be thrilled.

How beautiful! I do not have the patience for crocheting or knitting.

It is going to be gorgeous and I hope she hand washes it very gently.

Looks like you are on the right track, and your shawl is going to look just as beautiful as the heirloom one once was.

She is so lucky to have found you, because you are the one person in the world who can do it justice. It's a miracle that she still had the pattern to send to you.

Thanks. I must say I am relieved I don't have to recreate the pattern.
