Hair of the Dog

If you know me at all, you would have realized right away that this would not be about hangover cures. It is about my continued progress through my passion for the manipulation of fibre.

First of all, these are not the dogs the hair came from but they are the same breed.

Blue Merle Shetland Sheepdogs aka Shelties.

Here is some, not all, of the dog hair the kind dog lady from next door gave me. She warned me that she hadn't bathed the dogs before she brushed them but WHOOOEEE! did that hair ever stink. Finding three clumps of matted poo in the mix didn't deter me......too much.

Ready for carding.

Here is the dog hair carded and rolled into rolags.

Ready for spinning.

Rolag being spun on spinning wheel.

All spun up and washed twice but it still smells pretty bad.

Ready for ball winding.

Starting to knit.

Lovely to work with if you don't mind stinky dog hair in your eyes, mouth and up your nose.

From pooch to purse in five days.

A bribe...er....I mean gift for the nice dog lady who I hope will become one of my suppliers of fine furs for the descriminating shopper.

A close up of the Sheltie Bag.

PSSST: Don't tell her what I'm going to be selling my dog hair products for. She may want a piece of the action.

These photos look great -- You really should write and do the photography for a spinning/knitting book, especially using non-sheep wool and hair like you've done. My one sister would probably love to have a dog-hair item. I'll be looking in your store...

Having had a Sheltie, I know about that kind of fur. I wish I could give you some Rex fur. It varies from platinum to golden blonde.

I just had a peek at his photo. Rex is a beautiful colour and he looks so soft.

What a great job you've done with the fur. Did you know that Mum spun and knit some of Teddy and Tartan's fur and it didn't include any obnoxious material? They were and are clean guys. Mum used her dog hair as an accent in sweaters. Woof! Woof!

I washed......well, I actually soaked the purse in warm soapy water for about four hours (I forgot about it) and it smells fine now. Also the gentle wringing out I gave it caused a beautiful, fuzzy halo. I'm really pleased with it.

What an effort. I bow to your perseverance and skill. So funny to be reading this on the day I took my big (17.5 pounds) Chewy to the vet and we had to shave his hind end that couldn't be cleaned because of dried poop permanently embedded. He can't clean himself properly anymore. Bottom line, I have to check him daily.

You spun it straight without any wool? I bow down to you.... Show me Sun.
No poop in my fur.

Will do. The dog lady can wait until Monday. She doesn't even know I'm giving it to her.

You did the whole shebang there. It's a real treat to see it from dog to finished purse. My cousin in England sent me the cutest knitted dolls, I'll post the photos soon.

I used 50g/1.75 oz of of dog hair. The bag is 16.5 cm X 18cm with a 51cm drop (length of strap from shoulder to bag). That's 6.5 in X 7 in with a 20 in drop in American. It was fun!

This is great! A product that doesn't require the animal to be dead!

There is an old hippy couple who raise alpaca locally. Not a big farm... just a few dozen animals.

Here are a few more; wool, alpaca, lama, angora, cashmere...

I agree!

You are a braver soul than I. The dog poop would have done it for me.

I think I might invest in some rubber gloves.
