Wednesday morning I got an email telling of a local farm giving way, for FREE, their Cheviots' freshly shorn fleeces. Anyone was welcome to drop by Saturday, Sunday or Monday afternoon and help themselves. A spinning friend and I got there just after 1:00 this afternoon. Another friend beat us there by about 1 minute. I think the three of us made off with half the fleeces that were out. I stuffed two large, green, garbage bags while my friends filled one extra large bag each. I weighed it when I got home.
A total of 16 pounds. After skirting the fleece (ripping off and throwing away the lanolin, dirt and sheep poo caked locks)and washing the wool. I'll be lucky to end up with ten pounds. Tonight I am one very happy although just a tad stinky fibre fiend.

Lots of work involved I am guessing, but you'll wind up with something special. Then, of course, we get to see what you do with it, yes?
Nice!! Is there a good market for fleece? I do wonder when I get out of horses if sheep would be a good option to keep the grass down. It would be handy if they could generate some money from their fleece. I wouldn't eat them. Yuck.
I wonder if you took them a loaf of bread or something, when they have an spare fleece lying around they'll call you direct.
Good find!
Ten pounds is still nothing to sneeze at. You'll have fun!!
Wow, what a loot! Lucky lady. I should get back into spinning now that school is over.
Good for you!! You'll have lots of fun with that one. Keep us posted!
Congratulations. Hard to believe it ends up snowy white.
