Cataracts

That certainly wasn't what I expected to hear at today's eye examination. My optometrist, Dr T, said they're just beginning and it could be years before I need surgery. On the other hand, after surgery, the new lenses would act like contact lens and my vision would improve.
I was shocked to learn that I haven't had an eye exam in seven years. Dr T said he can find no trace of glaucoma but as I have a higher than average chance of getting it he would like me to come in for the eye exam once a year.
They also took pictures of the inside of my eyeballs and I'm happy to report that my optic nerve and blood vessels are in tip top shape.
My myopic vision has deteriorated and as I have a policy of buying new frames every time I need new lenses I will be getting a pair of brand spanking new glasses. The lady who assisted me said, "These suit you. The grey frame matches your hair." I hope she's not getting a commission from the sale.

If these new glasses last seven years I will only be paying an average of $154.00 a year for them.

After cataract surgery, I have 20/20 vision with my glasses. I usually change glasses every other year, but am becoming so "rough" on my glasses, that I have them all scratched up before the first year ends. The last time I got two pair - wear one pair every day and have a new, unscratched pair for Sunday. Ha!!

I was getting to the point that I couldn't distinguish colors - bought blue earrings thinking they were black. Now I can't have that!!! Your glasses are really expensive in Canada. I pay only about $460 a pair here in Texas.

The cost is outrageous for some bits of plastic, glass and wire. The frames alone are $223.00. I did, however, get the deluxe lenses; they turn into sunglasses when it's sunny, progressive lenses instead of ordinary bifocals and as regular lens are very thick, in my prescription, I paid extra for thin lenses.

I really think they make the printing smaller, now I have switched from glasses to a magnifying glass, must get my eyes tested, though on second thoughts, since I am well into the senior group I find I look much better in the mirror with out my glasses.

We have a drawer full of magnifying glasses, (gifts from Betty) all different shapes and sizes. I expect we'll be putting them to good use before too long.

In spite all the reassurances, looking at it from the younger side of the spectrum, I know how you feel, it's an old person's condition, and darn it, we're not that old yet.

You said it!
We spring chickens have got to stick together and not let those old folks(60+) get us down.

You can have whatever you want to request. Cataract surgery is not painful and your vision improves to the point that you do not need glasses except for close work.

If I start having trouble seeing my knitting I'll be requesting it.

I wouldn't worry much about the cataracts. I was told ten years ago that I had them, but that it would also be years before they would need to be removed. I suspect your vision problems are related to age--damn that nasty word. It robs us of so many things.I'm with you! No commission for that saleslady.

What do you mean by "related to age"? I've only just turned 59. I haven't even begun to age!

Ed and I see our eye doctor every six months and have all the tests that older people have. We have both had cataract surgery and Ed is due to have the procedure to remove film that sometimes forms over the lens. It has something to do with one's immune system. I had that same follow-up procedure. Our vision has improved and Ed was taking eye drops for early stage glaucoma and this is no longer necessary. I have a thick cornea and get a high reading but do not have glaucoma. The implanted lens had to allow for this. Also, my eye color, hazel all my life, are now blue-green.
