What I Did on My Summer Vacation Part 1

The Accident:
The morning of the accident DH and I both awoke with the typical symptoms of food poisoning. We suffered through the day and went to bed early that night. At 10:30pm the motel's manager was knocking on our door. He told us he had received a phone call from a couple who's apartment overlooked our parking lot. They had told the manager that at approximately 9:15pm a big pick up truck, GMC Sierra, pulled into the parking lot and tried to park to the right of our little rental car but the car on his right was angled too much so he backed out and pulled around our car trying to park on our left. He made three attempts to park straight in the angled parking space and on the third try he clipped the back left corner of our bumper. He then, in an attempt to hide the damage to his truck, turned his truck around and backed into the space on our left. Finally, he got out of his truck and went to his room. The witnesses were sitting out on their balcony, on the second floor, and saw everything from beginning to end. They waited an hour to see if he was going to come back and put a note on our car but he never did so they called the motel and let the manager know what they had seen. When the manager knock on our door we all went over to look at the vehicles and while I snapped pictures DH phoned the rental company and the police. The cop showed up in about half an hour and while he was taking down the particulars an old guy with a little dog on a leash approached and *innocently* asked, "What's going on?" Everyone ignored him the first time he asked and I think the cop was on the verge of telling him to move along when the old guy says, "That's my truck." The cop told him he had hit our car and the old guy says, "Oh, I don't think I did that." When the cop told him there were witnesses the old guy says, "Well I guess I did but I don't remember doing that." The cop either believed him (which I doubt) or he just didn't want the hassle of charging the old guy with hit and run. By the time we finally got to go back to bed it was well after midnight. Many thanks to the witnesses.

Comments:

We live in a turn around cul de sac and periodically a huge truck clips a mail box. Good thing witnesses can back you up so you are not liable for the damage. Waiting for Part 2.

What a PIA, but it least it shouldn't cost you anything.

It will be the old guy's insurance that will be taking care of it. What does an old man need with a big truck like that anyway? Not that I'd expect you to know. You're nowhere near as old as the old guy. Where's the foot-in-mouth smiley?

Hope the rental company isn't causing you grief.

We haven't heard a peep from the rental company or the insurance co.

Those trucks are fun to drive, but just too darn big to park.
