I Quit!

Two years ago, when I restarted my job of delivering newspapers I had one route of 75. The office gave me a granny cart and a carrier bag which I didn't need. I loaded up the cart and in one hour I was done. Over the next year my deliveries increased to 78 and the paper got heavier and thicker with more and more advertising fliers so I began to use the carrier bag for the papers that overflowed the cart. By October of this year the newspapers were so thick they could no longer be pushed through a letter slot. I had to roll the paper and stuff it in a plastic sleeve to be left on the front porch of houses with letter slots. My knee had been giving me trouble for some time so I also bagged and tossed all newspapers being delivered to houses, churches and businesses with more than three stair steps to the door. I was bagging 90% of them and this took an extra hour of my time before I even left the house and I needed to make two trips to deliver all the papers. So I was putting in two hours of work and getting paid $3.90 an hour. The minimum wage is $8.00 an hour. After one of my mini rants regarding crappy jobs DH pointed out that with my numb feet, aching knee, stiff thumb and wonky shoulder this job doesn't seem to be doing much for my health and we don't need the money so I printed off my letter of resignation and I quit. December 1st I will be returning the granny cart, carrier bag and plastic sleeves to the newspaper office. I will also be canceling delivery of that paper to my home as the news is a week old and most of the advertising fliers are for out of town stores.

Nice outfit. Do you get to keep it?

Na. Too bad. I was planning on wearing it to DH's office Christmas party.

I'm so relieved, because of those times you slipped on the painted concrete - you deserved hazard pay, not slave wages.

You're not the only one who's relieved.

I love my morning newspaper but I would not get up that early to deliver any ones paper. The carrier I have now is the best one I have ever had. He rides in his car and is very careful where he throws it. He can't possibly make enough from his paper route to pay for the wear and tear on his car..it is a thankless job.

Now that I know just how thankless a job it is I give my delivery lady a little something extra at Christmas.

Good for you. Around here all papers are delivered by car and tossed from car window into driveway. We consider ourselves fortunate when the carrier avoids swayles filled with rain water. Enjoy your new freedom. They have lost a valuable worker.

I think they'll be finding that out when they try to find someone to take my job on Friday. (I did give them two weeks notice.)

I would have given it up long before you did.

I couldn't help it. I've always been overly conscientious.

It was a thankless, underpaid job and is probably responsible for your aches and pains.

You said it, in a nutshell.

I don't blame you at all. Delivering papers (in all, weathers) is a thankless job (but, however you're absence or lateness of the delivery, will be noticed). I have always said: "the more you do, the less you're thought of".
Sit back and continue doing what you love!

I certainly will.
