Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Today I completed a project that required more of my carpentry skills. I needed a contraption I could use to measure my hand spun yarn. Most discerning knitters require the length of a ball of yarn instead of the weight. One used to purchase 4 50 gram balls of yarn to complete a project but now patterns say you'll need 400 metres to complete the project. I needed something I could measure my freshly spun yarn on and the back of the rocking chair (measures 18 inches) that sits out on the deck was the only thing in or around the house that came close. I searched both Walmart and Zellers for something useful that was 36 inches or 1 metre across but in vain so I decided to make my contraption. It required a 1X42 inch board, two screws, two BIG hooks, some sand paper and oak stain. Not counting the supplies we already had in the garage, it came to about five bucks.

My new yarn measuring board empty.

I even got to use DH's drill until I realized I didn't know how to use a drill. Do I apply pressure? What does it mean when the drill starts drilling faster and I didn't squeeze the trigger any harder? What if it hits a knot and the drill jumps and goes through my foot? Then I called DH to finish drilling the holes.

My new yarn measuring board in use. This skein was 65 yards in length.

I positioned the hooks 1 yard apart instead of 1 metre because it took up a little less room on my craft room wall and I would have to convert it to yards for the American knitters anyway.

I think it's pretty clever even if I am terrified of the drill.

I think that all of us girls have been forced to learn something about tools since we don't have "handyman" husbands. Looks like you did a good job with your measuring board and it even looks straight.

We were spoiled growing up. I thought all men were born with carpentry skills.

That worked out well. Multi purpose and functional. I have a niddy-noddy but still manage to tangle my yarn on it.

It has actually replaced my niddy noddy. The 2 yard circumference still fits on my swift.

As a 20-something in my first marriage, my late husband taught me how to help him renovate our loft and bought me my own hammer and put my name on it. Those were the days. I don't go near tools now. Your board looks great. I don't have a loom room.

I suspect you don't have a loom either.

Nice job!

My thoughts exactly.

You did a beautiful job, Marg, it's not just functional, it looks good, too. Power tool phobia. I'd be right there with you.

Thanks. I'm not so great with hand tools either.

Your just ful of ideas, and this is a neat one, and much more compact than my warping board hanging in the loom-room.

This little contraption will come in handy. I have a skein of wool and husky washed and ready to be measured.

I wish I had carpentry skills but have to confess that I am afraid of all
that stuff.

When I was a kid, my dad let me hold the board down (by standing on it) but I think he could sense I would never be able to hammer a nail in straight.

It's the dentist's drill I'm terrified of! Your project looks good!!

Just thinking about a dentist puts my teeth on edge. Come to think of it, the drill press at my first job (in a door knob factory) was NOT my favourite shift. Maybe I'm afraid of all drills.
Thanks.
