It Was a Dark and Stormy Night

OK, so it wasn't quite dark and it wasn't exactly stormy. I was sitting in the basement; fire blazing, knitting, watching TV and thinking I should go upstairs and thaw out something to cook for dinner when suddenly the lights, gas fireplace fan and TV went off. The whole house was eerily quiet. It was 5:45 PM and aside from the warm glow of the fire there was just a hint of fleeting daylight coming through the basement windows. Light enough to see my way upstairs, I turned off the fire and went in search of flashlights and candles. By the time DH arrived home it was pitch dark outside. A large area of Port Alberni was without power. As it was so dark I would have had trouble making sandwiches DH suggested dining out. We chose Solda’s Restaurant as they are far enough away that they probably had power. Almost immediately after we had placed our orders someone at a nearby table got the word on their cell phone and announced, “The power’s back on!” I really like these power outages that don’t last so long the milk goes warm or meat in the freezer thaws but last just long enough to go out for dinner.

That's a great way to handle a power outage. The power has gotten more stable here over the years. It use to go out weekly (or at least it seemed that way), and now it's pretty rare, even during the bad storms.

Sounds like it worked out well. I was at someone's house the other day when their power went out and it was 10 below zero (F). It was darker than dark outside, and not all that bright inside with flashlights. Although I felt like I should stay and keep her company in case she needed help, I wanted to get home to my all-house back up generator, and high-tailed it out of there. I've got enough problems at my house without trying to take on someone else's, and I'm glad I realized that.

I'm wondering how many people had dinner in the oven when the power went out. There was a mass exodus of cars leaving our neighbourhood between 6:00 and 6:30. No doubt they were all heading for various restaurants.
At least you didn't leave your friend in the dark. Most of our flashlights are in need of fresh batteries and the shaker flashlight I bought at Walmart doesn't even work.

Funny, the power went off for an hour or so and just came back on, here. I enjoy the break too, having candles and giving the computers a rest.

We really should get some proper lighting for blackouts. Candles are no good for reading, knitting or spinning.

Losing power for long periods of time tests your ability to cope but you
just had enough to get you out of the house and have dinner out. Lucky you!!

I was relieved the power was back on when we got home. I had lots of knitting to catch up on.

We also have power outages in SW Florida that last about 1 to 2 hours. although we did lose power for a week during the Charlie hurricane in 2004. In New York, we'd have the entire Eastern seaboard go out for 3 days, and then no problems for 10 years. I hope you enjoyed your dinner.

We've always been well stocked with food and the gas fireplace doesn't need electricity to work but I'd miss my computer and be devastated by all the TV shows that wouldn't get recorded.
