Busy Yesterday

First up was my 11:00 annual check up with the new doctor. At 10:00 I got a call from his receptionist reminding me of my appointment. She usually calls the day before with reminders. I thought that new doctor must keep her awfully busy for her to be calling only one hour before the appointment. I arrived at 10:58, checked in with the receptionist, took the seat furthest from to toy box and commenced to knit. At about 11:15 the next person showed up for his appointment. However, when he checked in the receptionist told him the doctor was behind with his appointments and he might want to come back in 30 to 45 minutes. Why wasn't I offered that option. There's a shoe store nearby. I could have easily killed some time in there. Oddly enough the other four people in the waiting room knew each other and I was entertained by each of their stories as to why they were there. The most interesting was the logger who was hit in the mouth by a flying "limb". It took me a few seconds to realize he was talking about a branch and not an arm or a leg. People came and went and I discovered the true reason as to why the receptionist was so rushed off her feet and behind in her work. She frequently joined in on the patients' conversations and initiated a few of her own. I do hope the doctor didn't overhear just how much she is looking forward to her vacation in Northern Saskatchewan. She may return to find she's been replaced by someone with a bit more enthusiasm for the job. Exactly one hour after I had passed through the front door I was measured at 5' 5.4" (I used to be 5' 6") and weighed at uiw lbs (Oops, new keyboard is acting up.). Then I was ushered into an examining room. I barely (yuk, yuk) had time to strip, don paper vest (Yes, I said vest not gown.), and hop up onto the exam table before the doctor, without knocking, flung wide the door and strode into the room. Due to his heavy accent I misunderstood several of his questions and he wasn't as thorough as the old doctor but he didn't even mention my weight and he didn't leave me with the impression that getting so up close and personal was distasteful. Finally I was handed the paperwork for my lab tests and sent on my merry way.

Then I went home, made lunch and pottered around for an hour before headed back down town for my physiotherapy appointment. It could be my imagination but I think my foot is feeling a smidge better than it did last week. Of course, by the time I left, the physiotherapist had lasered, poked, prodded and manipulated my foot so much I would have gladly accepted an offer to be taken to my car in a wheel chair.

On the way home I stopped off at Safeway and hobbled around the store picking up sustenance for the rest of the week. By the time I got home and put the groceries away it was time to start dinner and after that there was a load of laundry left over from the day before.

Thank goodness the doctor was so far behind schedule or I wouldn't have got any knitting done.

Went along with Ed for his annual and waited two hrs. because the doc was running late. He apologized. Another time I was treated to a conversation between two other waiting patients about one's colostomy and how she dealt with the bag. Great imagery.

Nothing tries my patience more than sitting in a waiting room. I guess that's why they call it a "waiting" room. I always take a book. Do you take knitting?

Silly question. I just about knit a whole blanket that day.

someone once suggested that patients who are left waiting for extended periods might bill the doctor for their wasted time. mebee that will speed things up a bit. I hear you about the foriegn docs. All of mine had thick accents and names like eye charts. Don't Americans practice medicine anymore?

I once phoned to find out in the doctor was on time because I was running late and the receptionist got real huffy with me. I wish someone would knock her off her pedestal.

I hate waiting and they get hysterical if they have to wait. Once I was
late finishing a bone density test and the nurse told me I had thrown them
off schedule.

I would have had a few choice words for her supervisor.

We waited for an hour and a half today for Jenn's OB/GYN MD. He had an excuse. He delivered a baby at 1am this morning and another one later on in the day. It set him back, he says. We almost always have to wait at least forty-five minutes.
Glad your foot seems to be improving.

My doctor offered neither an excuse nor an apology.

I'll bet it was fun hearing the four-way conversation. Hope your foot is better in time for your vacation.

There is slight improvement but there's still time.
