Spinning in Public

I took my spinning wheel to the Crafters' Market today.

It generated a lot of interest. One German lady (tourist) in particular was all excited and dragged the rest of her party over to watch me spin. An older gentleman went crazy over my Goin' Green shopping bags but left without buying one. He came back about 20 minutes later with his adult daughter in tow. She thought he was nuts and told him so, "It's only a bag, Dad." but she couldn't dampen his enthusiasm and he bought one on the spot.

I had this sign taped to my table.

People kept stopping to ask what I wanted pet brushings for. One lady said her cat had beautiful long brushings and when I asked if she would save them for me she said the cat was dead. A fellow told me he would bring me bags of his dogs' soft, multi-coloured brushings. After I thanked him he said they were about one inch long. I was disappointed it was so short but I'll probably never see him again anyway. Lots of people have promised me their pets' brushings but no one has delivered yet. While I was taking a break, DH stayed at my table and told another fellow to bring me his dogs fur, even though the guy told him he didn't brush the dog but cut the fur off. He will probably be the one person who will actually follow through with bringing me his dog hair and I will have to throw it out as it is no good for spinning.

It was freezing cold down at Harbour Quay today. I had to ask DH to go home and get my coat and some fingerless gloves because my hands kept freezing when I tried to spin. Because of the weather there were fewer people wandering around the Crafters' Market but, surprisingly, I had the most customers today. The organizers have asked if I would attend the local Christmas Craft Fair and another CCFair not too far out of town to give spinning demonstrations. I'm flattered but I don't think I will as it would cost me $80.00 and $70.00 respectively to rent a table to sell my wares. It would cost me nothing if I'm just giving demonstrations but it's in November when it will be pouring rain and cold, two conditions that are not at all healthy for my $600.00 wheel. Also, I don't think I would enjoy spinning at a noisy, people packed craft fair.

If K has an undercoat I'll take his brushings too.

Yes, I noticed the handsome fellow right away and called K over to see your sign. I'll start brushing him today (T not K that is).

Re. the Christmas craft fair(s), wouldn't they be indoors? In any case, if the organizers want you, they should bear the cost of your table, plus gas & mileage, etc. What are your lessons worth? Free? Not if it's going to cost you. Great photo, lots of nice stuff. Man's daughter was obnoxious.

I would still have to transport my wheel to ands from the venue in the cold and pouring rain.
I wouldn't be giving lesson. I'd just sit there spinning and answering any questions people might have; such as, "What are you making?" (I would need to restrain myself from replying, "Straw into gold."
)
The man's daughter was quite rude. I was embarrassed for him and was glad to see him not be deterred by her negativity.

Spectacular! You have such a nice variety of beautiful things. Do you make those baby snuggies that are the latest thing around here? Basically they are an oversize hat big enough to hold a newborn.

Yes, I saw them there and wondered could that possibly be what I think it is? Isn't it funny how someone had this bright idea to make a really big hat and use it to hold the baby?

Thanks.
I call my "Baby Cuddle Sack". I have two left. Can't you see them? They're between the kitty heads (Kitty Kuddles) and the turquoise, felted, nesting bowls (not to be confused with the Buckets O' Balls).

Would you like me to start collecting Tartan's hair? That might motivate me to brush him more often. Have you approached local groomers to see if you can get brushings from them?
comment by islander on June 20, 2011 1:27 PM ()
Oh YES please! Sheltie brushings is the best pet hair I've ever spun. Did you recognize Tartan on my poster?

Your bags must be wonderful and very durable as is not the case with
our cloth ones. One Christmas my favorite aunt crocheted covers for our
clothes hangers and they are amazing. Still nicely padded after 40 years.

They are made from left over nylon at carpet factories. They stretch to hold a lot and will last forever.

I think the spinning wheel generated more interest! It worked. Just imagine how it will go when the weather starts cooperating. Take care and have fun.

It was so much fun I'm going to take it with me every Sunday.
