Trains & Sawmills & Grandsons Oh My!

Tomorrow DH and I are taking our three local grandsons, ages six, eight and twelve, to McLean Mill, a nearby national historic site. We'll take them to the 1912 Canadian Pacific Railway station located in downtown Port Alberni to catch the 10 o' clock train, a restored 1929 Baldwin steam locomotive. From 10 to 10:35 when we will arrive at the old McLean Mill we will endeavour to keep the boys seated and restrain them from leaning out the restored passenger car windows. Upon arriving at the mill site we shall attempt to hustle them through the gift shop so as not to incur any added expense of purchasing train colouring books, train t-shirts, train hats, train whistles or wooden trains. The sawmill itself, the only commercially operating steam-operated sawmill in Canada, is not operational on Sundays but they should be enthralled by the steam donkey, a steam powered winch used for logging, which is the only commercially operating steam-donkey in North America. We shall have a picnic lunch on the grounds and at 1:00 we will catch the train for the return trip to Port Alberni. I fully expect that by this time DH and I will have to restrain ourselves from giving a little push as the boys lean out the train windows.

Actually, I am quite looking forward to spending some time with our grandsons. I'll post photos tomorrow.

Sounds great. If the gift shop becomes a problem and if you can manage it, confine them to one item each. Looking forward to the photos.
