This, That & the Other

This: Tonight is my last Osteoarthritis class. It's on nutrition. I sure hope the instructor has more to say than, "Don't eat bad food. Eat good food." Is it obvious that I don't think I'm getting much out of this course? Last week she just rehashed everything we had already gone over. Although, she did bring in some visual aids; a pair of walking poles, a wrist brace, a tens machine (pain relief without drugs) and some elastic exercise bands. I did learn some exercises I can do to strengthen the muscles and keep from stiffening, in the arthritic areas.

That: We had all the heating ducts in the house cleaned out. I'm hoping it will improve my allergies. They spent 45 minutes sucking everything, down to the last particle of dust, out of the furnace and duct work and installing a super deluxe, reusable furnace filter. I almost hyperventilated over the horrendously huge bill. How huge? Lets just say well over $10.00 a minute. At least it only needs to be done every two to three years and next time we won't be needing the solid gold furnace filter.

The Other: It isn't finished yet but I couldn't wait to show you how nice that Patons FX Sock yarn looks when NOT used for socks. I will post a dazzling photo when it's finished and blocked.

This one's a keeper.

Is that your "free" yarn. That is the great thing about sock yarn is it is so versatile. They really looks great it that pattern.

Yes, it is. I paired it with some tan wool I got off eBay years ago. It's all finished and blocking on the guest bed right now. I'll post pictures when it's dry.

A woman in my knitting group is on a special (Macrobiotic I think) diet and can't eat any night shade vegetables, among other things. She always brings her own food for our potluck lunches and contributes something healthy as well. Last time, I almost broke my front teeth on her svelt (sp?) cookies.

Lovely work, Marg! I'll be interested to see if the duct cleaning actually improves the situation. I've often wondered if it would help me.

Is this a "ladies only" blogging session? Sorry to intrude! Love the pattern on the shawl.

Not ladies only, I'm here.

Good to hear your arthritis is in remission, mine isn't bothering me much these days. Your shawl looks like a big success, pretty colors.I'm still working on the V neck top with the rust and brown yarn you gave me, sorry I can't send you a picture but it looks good. Went to see "The Kings Speech" last nigh with K. it desereved the Academy Award.

I'll show you the exercises when we next come to visit.

I can't use the Capsacian rub either..it makes my skin hurt like a really bad sunburn. The only thing that helps my arthritis and scoliosis is aspirin and we all know what happens if you take to many aspirin. Several years ago I was taking 2 every 6 hours. I cut my finger and thought I was going to have to go to the emergency room to get it stopped bleeding.

A hot tub makes all my aches and pains disappear. Unfortunately they come back as soon as I get out of the tub. Fortunately I don't have much in the way of aches and pains right now.

My mother was told to not eat night shade vegetables. Personally, I find
a memory foam pillow which eases my neck and shoulders, Aleve and a Capsacian rub on the affected area helps me. If you go for capsacian, try
the lowest strength. I find the heat soothing but Ted can't stand it.

Thank you. If/when my arthritis flares up I will be referring back to everyone's suggestions.

Let us know if they talk about avoiding the nightshade family of vegetables (potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, and capsicums (peppers)).

Some one asked about that very thing tonight and we were told that no real studies have been done but we should keep a food diary and see if any foods make the inflammation worse or better. Basically, if it doesn't bother you, go ahead and eat it.

Love the colors in the shawl -- ivory and teal -- my favorite combination. Sorry your osteo class isn't giving you more hard facts. I deal with osteo by continuing to use the affected part carefully, massage, moist heat, full range of motion exercise -- everything done without forcing. It has worked for me.

I love those colours too, although they look rather faded in the photo. Blocking will bring out all the lacy bits.
My arthritis isn't bothering me much at the moment but I expect it will get worse. I did pick up some tips that I have already put into practice.
