Safeway

I'm just taking a break from casting off the Queen Anne's Lace Shawl. It will have taken four weeks to knit this one. I hope it's not too big to be blocked on the queen size guest bed. Photo to come soon.

I've been doing my best to be green by recycling everything that is recyclable. So, when I discovered The macaroni salad container I purchased at Safeway was NOT recyclable I fired off a letter to their head office in Calgary.
This is what I sent them:
"It has come to my attention that the Port Alberni Safeway is using non-recyclable plastic containers, specifically, The Deli Counter, 1.25kg, macaroni salad. I feel this practice is unconscionable and I will be inspecting all plastic, food containers for the recycling symbol in future. If there is no symbol I will not be purchasing that product. I would like to know if you plan on switching to recyclable containers soon.
Also, I love the fresh new look of our store but does the world really need another Starbucks?"

This morning I was happy to see a response to my letter but a little puzzled after I read it.
"Dear Valued Customer:

Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding your local Safeway store.

You commented on the use of non-recyclable plastic containers, especially at the Deli Department. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you have encountered. Safeway continually strives for a positive shopping environment. We will forward your comments to the appropriate department for review.

You also commented on the addition of a Starbucks counter during the remodeling of the store. We are sorry to hear that we are not meeting your expectations. We will forward your comments to our Retail Operations Department for review.

Finally, you complimented the overall appearance of the store following the remodel. Your comments will be shared with the staff.

If you would like to discuss this further, please reply to this email or call our toll free number at 1-877-XXX-XXXX and reference contact I.D. XXXXXXXX. One of our associates will be happy to assist you.

We appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you soon. Thank you for shopping at Safeway.

Sincerely,

Safeway Customer Service Team"

When did they start using robots to reply to customer complaints? I'm afraid to call the toll free number. I might just end up having a discussion with another machine. And what's with this 'looking forward to seeing me soon'? I have no plans to visit Calgary. Only a robot wouldn't realize it's a two day drive to/from Calgary. Only a robot would thank me for my complaint and then proceed to tell me absolutely nothing in five more paragraphs. OH! I wonder if this is what politicians do during their summer break.
I'm thinking of taking the correspondence in to Safeway to show the staff. Then we can all have a good laugh over it.

Hmmm.... I go to SafeWay all the time, you can be sure I will be checking the containers at the deli. We'll see if its the same in California.
The letter did sound like a form letter that they just filled in key words to make it "sound" like they were responding to your letter. Who do the think they are fooling.

Should I send a complaint about their response to my complaint?

maybe they've been informed by other businesses about your history of being a s**t-disturber......

Zeller's may have put me on a black list. At least they give you discounts and gift cards when you complain.

Large corporations always seem to respond to complaints in this manner. I don't know if it's because they get so many, but still want to respond so they seem personal, but they just don't get that it does seem to make them sound robotic. Can't wait to see the picture of the shawl!

I expect if I did call the phone number I'd get a machine telling me to, "Press one for..... Press two for..... .......Press 27 for.....
Shawl photos coming up.

By all means share it with your Safeway store.

On second thought I don't think I will. They've been a little stressed out trying to work around the renovations.

It's not an inconvenience to discover disregard for the environment, it's more of a concern, I would say. Well, you're their buddy now.

I'm thinking I should fill out and mail one of their little 'how-are-we-doing?' cards every time I find a non-recyclable item in the store.
