Dust Kitties

I suppose I could have titled this article 'Angel Dust' as well.
DH's birthday is coming up and I didn't have a clue what to get him. After all, what do you get for a man who's hobbies consist of reading the newspaper and volunteer work? Then, this morning I had an epiphany. I have a small bag of Angel's brushings and a big box of brown Blue Faced Leicester. I could card them together, spin it and knit him a soft, warm cowl for the Winter. Who wouldn't want their beloved pet draped gently around their neck? So I got to work and carded a batt. Now, Angel's brushings are at most a half an inch in length. The BFL is at least five inches. I'm having a terrible time blending the two together. I have carded the same batt over and over and there are still lumps of cat fur just sitting on the BFL. This is the good side:

It should make for an interesting looking yarn.
I just keep telling myself this is a labour of love. I know DH will love it.

I don't know what happened to the colour. The BFL is actually a dark brown and the cat fur is tan.

Your project is daunting but we all have faith in you. Yes, DH will love it.

Not really daunting. Just extra work. Kinda like making a cake from scratch instead of using a cake mix.

I am mystified by the blue color as well. It is so pretty though.

I'll try taking another photo in different light.

Is Angel going to recognize it when it's done?

I shouldn't think so. It will be thoroughly washed.

I wonder if you fed small quantities of cat hair in with the Leister while spinning, if it would feed in better? I have done that with mohair & wool because mohair doesn't have the same cling. Isn't it amazing how it looks blue when it's brown this yarn has a mind of it's own, guess thats why they call it BLUE leister.

I am feeding small quantities of the cat hair. Any smaller and it will be hair by hair. I think I'll stop saving Angel's hair now. My monitor shows grey BFL with white tufts of cat hair. The sheep is called Blue Faced Leicester because the skin on it's nose actually is a dark blue.

What a sweet idea! Best wishes with the carding and knitting — looking forward to seeing Angel's cowl! How snuggly!
