Dr Doogie

My new doctor has earned a lot of respect from me today. Last year Dr Duck was pushing me to start taking Crestor. He pushed so hard I thought he might earn a fee from AstraZeneca for each patient he prescribed it for (commonly known as a kickback). He pushed so hard I dug in my heals and delayed treatment until he retired to Alberta. Dr Doogie, on the other hand wants to go slow and maybe check out some other drugs that might be more beneficial with regards to my medical history. I was flabbergasted to discover my LDL (bad cholesterol) was a little lower and my HDL (good cholesterol) was a little higher than last year. I was expecting my blood tests to come back worse not better after months of inactivity due to the plantar fasciitis and weeks of eating mountains of eggs and mybloggers, fried, fattening foods while vacationing in the Maritmes. I also got the results of my knee x-ray. It's more arthritis. It only hurts when I walk but it's good to know I'm not doing myself a permanent injury by using it. Actually, using it is the best thing I can do for it. Now I really do need to learn how to knit and walk.

I forgot to mention, my blood pressure was 130/70. Maybe I will live long enough to use up all my stash.

You sound very fit to me. Capsacian is a wonderful treatment for sore and
achy joints. It doesn't work for everyone but I love the heat on my
shoulders when they get achy. Always start with the lowest strength.

Our individual health insurance company is leaving the market at the end of the year, so we had 30 days to scramble and find a new carrier. We did find one, and feel fortunate that they aren't going to charge us extra for Mr. YouKnow's high cholesterol and the arthritis in my knee. Charge extra? Heck, we were lucky they even agreed to accept us as customers so we can pay them close to $10,000 a year for basic coverage with a $5000 deductible. Thanks to Obama Care there is a high-risk insurance pool in our state where we could have found coverage, but I'm sure it would have cost a lot more than what we're getting. It doesn't help the poor and uninsured, just the rich and uninsured.

Have you tried red yeast rice for a natural cholesterol buster? I've used it for years and like it. No joint pains (except thumbs).

There are a number of non-med approaches to cholesterol control. I am using them successfully. They are summarized in this article from the Mayo Clinic:

I've also found my nice, trusted doctor is starting to harp on certain drugs like Celexa, which my insurance won't cover. Makes me wonder.
