Another Day

Yesterday DH drove around the island while I slept, fitfully, in the passenger seat. I did manage a 30 minute hike with him first thing in the morning but it wiped me out for the rest of the day.
I was feeling much better today which just proves my theory that it was food poisoning from either lunch at the White Spot or, more likely, that awful dinner at April Point. It's a fancy, shmancy resort and we had reservations for dinner but when we arrived we were told we had a choice of tables; one inside next to the excruciatingly loud Jazz band (I hate Jazz) or outside on the cold damp deck. We chose the deck so we could at least have a conversation without shouting at each other. So, back to today. We took another ferry to Cortes Island and toured around checking out the sights. One of the sights I wanted to see was the Craft Store at Squirrel Cove. We were on a bit of a tight schedule as we wanted to get the last ferry (5:50pm) back to Quadra Island so rather than wandering around looking for it I popped into restaurant to ask directions. On my fourth step inside the door the floor disappeared and I fell down the two steps to the seating area. I ended up sitting on the floor on a tender backside with a skinned elbow. Three employees rushed over to see if I was OK and one of them says, "That's always happening. We should paint the steps a bright yellow." Another one said, That wouldn't work because no one looks down. They are either looking straight ahead or to the right." I doubt they'll do anything until they get sued.
Gotta go before I get locked in the computer room.

Now a debate on jazz? Music like art is subjective. Fortunately, we are free to choose what speaks to us.

Can't imagine that what you are thinking of as jazz and real jazz could be the same thing. Jazz is what they did in the 30s and 40s. Are you sure that's what these places are offering? In any case, everything is too loud now. Jazz is Benny Goodman and Dizzy Gillespie and Satchmo and Artie Shaw. Please don't tell me you hate these guys. The classical music lover here totally thinks they were awesome.

I hate jazz! I would rather listen to a horde of croaking frogs than Jazz. Sing me a soothing ballad while strumming a guitar. Take me to a theatre to spend a classical evening with Strauss or Beethoven because I hate jazz!

Benny Goodman isn't so bad because he also had the big band songs. What we are talking about is the sort of modern jazz that has no structure or tune. And don't try to paint us as ignorant hicks because you think jazz is so wonderful. I happen to listen to classical music all the time, and Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach are not jazz composers. Each to his own.

No jazz for me, either, and I have never understood why most venues think they have to turn up the volume so much - it's no fun to have to scream to be heard.

No, sweet thing -- I wasn't being a snob. I was saying there is so much jazz that is as complex and innovative and involving as any classical piece of music from the greats. Then you have Miles Davis, whose too cool atonal, ahrhythmic sounds gave me a headache and yet, they called it jazz.

You have a fellow sufferer. I hate Jazz too, it gets on my nerves and I hate to confess this. Sorry about your fall. Hope the rest of the week
goes well for you.
