Orchard House B&b

We missed the ferry. We were the first car to miss the ferry. At least we were in a shady spot while we waited the hour and ten minutes for the next ferry and were the first car to board that one.

Taken from ferry as we approached Brentwood Bay.

After driving all afternoon in terrible heat and numerous bloody roundabouts we finally arrived in Sidney at 5:30pm. Upon arriving at the B&B we were told he wasn't expecting us until 7:30 pm so our room wasn't ready. WTF! He kicked the previous night's guests out at 9:30 this morning. What the heck was he doing all day? So we went for dinner.....unwashed, unbrushed and unrefreshed. We had dinner at Beacon Landing. From the prices, they fancied themselves to be a posh restaurant but the food belied that; a bland hamburger and over salted chips because the only dressing they would allow me on a salad was vinaigrette. I hate vinaigrette! I wanted blue cheese and they did have blue cheese. They just wouldn't put it on my salad. By the time we got back to the B&B it was 7:30 pm and we were finally allowed in, after shedding our shoes before stepping over the threshold. Weeeell, he could take a credit card but he preferred cash (I'd love to take a peek at his tax return.) so now we need to find a bank machine. We discovered this place is for sale and he wants to get out of the B&B business. In the last hour and 45 minutes no less than four jets have passed over the house. I swear to God, they sound like they are tying to land on the roof. In consideration for the other guests we have been asked to refrain from flushing the toilet and showering after 9:30 pm. (Like we might keep them awake. Ha!) The only window in the room is propped up with a two inch bit of wood. He might as well have a jerry pot under the bed. There were, at one time, two closets in this room. Now there are no closets but there is a tiny shower stall I'm sure to bruise my elbows on, when I shower in the morning as it is now passed 9:30. OMG! He didn't tell us what time we could start flushing and showering. Maybe we'll just leave the flushing up to him. There is an old house smell but it's not overly unpleasant. I don't think it's mold or any body decaying. Our room is stifling. I think I might just sleep in the chair next to the open window. Jumbo jet number five just landed on the roof.

While seated on the commode I could hear this odd gurgling sound and when I pressed my ear to the wall I realized it was the guest in the next room, snoring.

In the morning I needed to shower off the sweat. I avoided bashing my elbows by positioning myself angled corner to corner.

Lacking a third closet, the sink was placed at the foot of the bed. The room would have been quite cozy except for the fact it was about 100 degrees F in there.

The light fixture in the middle of the ceiling had a little wicker basket and three buttons glued to it, presumably in an attempt to hide the holes in the glass.

After we went to bed and turned off all the lights we were startled to see the interior of our room ablaze with the flashing red lights from the underbelly of jet # umpteen as it skimmed the roof of the B&B.

Breakfast, next morning was quite good. Contrary to reviews on Trip Advisor, The egg dish was delicious, the half slice of whole wheat toast was good, the muffin was tasty, there was butter and grape jelly on the table, the coffee was good and plentiful, our host did not monopolize the conversation and the British couple from New Zealand were very interesting breakfast companions. So, aside from the heat and the planes it wasn't half as bad as I was expecting.
I did find out that DH had checked the reviews, although, I think he did that after he'd booked the room. He's learning. ;o)

The reviews were pretty bad compared to the actual place but I would never stay there again.

The "posh restaurant" had a lot of fish dishes and I don't like most fish so I opted for the burger and salad but the waiter wouldn't allow the dressing substitution and that's how I ended up with the highly salted chips.
The gent was Scottish, his wife was English and they had emigrated to New Zealand.
We will never, ever stay there again.

I had a friend who's yard backed up against the train tracks. The first time I was there when a train thundered passed I thought it was an earthquake. My cup rattled in it's saucer, pictures danced on her walls and she seemed oblivious to it all.
