My House Plants Are Dying

I have had these plants for years no decades. They were the survivors of my black thumbs. What's different? I water them the same as always. They greened up a bit after I stopped singing to them. They were doing just fine until this, our first winter with the heat pump. That thing sucks every drop of moisture out of the air, my nasal passages, my skin and my house plants. :o(

I have had some luck with philodendrons. My outside efforts however always curl up and die within weeks of my ministrations. No plants in the house. The ficus tree outside in a pot is doing okay. Too okay. It's a lot taller than I wanted it to be and I can't reach it to trim it any more. It was on the pool deck for a long while and didn't do well at all in that spot. Maybe it doesn't like salt spray. It likes the front foyer much better. I'm out of ambition to do any more planting. I'm thinking of getting outdoor artificial flowers for the pots.

My solution - no plants in the house. We do have a bamboo in the apartment (like Mum's) which gets watered monthly and I had poinsettias over Christmas but now the house is back to being plant-free.

I like greenery in the house. Otherwise I would get rid of them all. I'm sure my allergies would thank me. I even thought about replacing them with fake plants but then I'd still have to dust them once a week.

PS: I've been trying to care for the plants at work, but I seem to have killed them instead...

My mom tells me that even her plants aren't doing very well this winter and she has very green thumbs. She blames it on the lack of sunshine.

You might have to try cactus in your desert of a house.

That might work.

We're so used to low humidity here we don't think about it much. But whenever someone gives an orchid plant, the recipient is always shocked that they'll have to mist the thing so it will stay humid enough.

Do you fertilize them? Mulch might solve the problem.

Have you tried some sort of mulch in the pots around the plants?
