Prosopagnosia

I think I may have mentioned this before but I have trouble recognizing faces. Today I discovered it has a name, prosopagnosia aka face blindness. I found a bonafide test: https://www.troublewithfaces.org/pi20_printable.pdf and out of mild, moderate and severe, my score was dead centre of moderate.

This article really struck home with me.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to pronounce prosopagnosia.

Prosopagnosia, that sounds like a flower bulb. I used to think I was pretty good at recognizing faces, because in old movies I usually recognized actors no one else in the room did, but in real life (where we aren't in black and white) I'm not so good. My brain programming could be a lot better.

Well yeah, not to you, but I read "The man who mistook his wife for a hat", but not "The man who mistook hos wife for a stranger".

I started out that test thinking how hard it is for the rest of us to understand how that must be for someone who has it. But as I worked through the questions, there were several that apply to me - I have in so many words told people that if they change clothes and/or I see them in a different context, be sure to remind me I've met them before. And come to think of it, all of the 40-something builders working on my new cabin look alike, and I don't even try to tell them apart, I just talk to the first one I come to as if he's in charge. And then there's the movie thing: all those 30-something male actors look alike to me and I firmly believe that unless there is a plot reason such as a confusion in identity built into the movie, there needs to be a blond, a brunette, and maybe a redhead among the main characters so I can tell them apart. So, look at me - mere moments after I'm congratulating myself on not having prosopagnosia, I'm realizing I'm right there with you trying to spell it, much less pronounce it.
