My Thoughts on Working

I don't think there is one person who 'wants' to work every day. Its just something we have to do to take care of our families. Was I happy about going back to work? Heck no! But I had to do it to survive this economy. Kota is still going through changes and gets upset at times. But we are working through it. Me and hubby both reassure him about how much we love him and how much better things will be for us.
That being said, let me tell you about my co-workers. I have not met too many that seem happy. They constantly complain and talk about other associates. I stay out of it. I mean really, we have to put in our time to get our paychecks, why don't we try to make the best of it?
Yesterday was my first day on the register by myself. I had a great day. I had so many compliments. And a couple people were amazed it was my first day. Oh sure, I had a couple times I needed help but I apologized to my customers and thanked them for their patience. I had some great conversations with customers, I laughed so hard at times! I kind of paid attention to other cashiers. One I didn't see smile all day. I never heard her talking to her customers. That has got to make for one really bad day. I know there are people who truly have bad jobs and lots of stress and I can understand them being unhappy. But come on, this is walmart. Being a cashier is an easy job! You ring things up, put it in bags and accept the payment.
My first couple of days I dreaded going in. I didn't want to work! but now, I am at peace with it. And if I can make one person smile while they are in my line, that makes my day. There are alot of people who cannot find a job, who cannot support their families. So I am going to appreciate the fact that I am able to work and that I found a job quickly.
In other news.... we will be moving this coming weekend!!!! I am working saturday and sunday noon till nine. Darn, I will miss out on all the heavy lifting! hehehe Both my older kids called me on Sunday to check in. Hubby cleaned the kitchen yesterday, and even mopped the floor! So I can say my life is going pretty good for a change. And thursday is pay day for me!

Sometimes you just have to do the work and make the best of it. But perhaps its tougher at the beginning of a new job routine, when things are new and it can get so crazy in retail. A positive attitude and a sense of humor are the secrets I think to getting through any day.
Hope your move is going okay!

You know when times are rough I am reminded of one of my favorite songs by Crystal Gayle from back in the late 70's. "I'll Do It All Over Again" Here is the chorus ~ " I know that I'll smile again and I know I'll get by again, I'll get back on my feet and then I'll do it all over again."

One of the verses:
Some you win, some you lose
Oh but I guess that's life.
Then you live and you learn
And never look back at the bridges you burn.

Oh I'm a little bit wiser now.

Then the chorus: That is from memory so, it may be a bit mixed up because that song is about 30 years old.

Mary, your good attitude will serve you and the customers a long long way. I can't stand approaching a cashier who can't look at me or greet me..... Hello.... we are fellow human beings, how bout a little eye contact or a smile. It's not too much to ask. You are doing fabulous and I'm so happy for your outlook.

What a great outlook! I appreciate your positive attitude. Hoping I get someone like you next time I check out at Wal-Mart. I like to talk to the cashiers, but sometimes they don't like to talk much.

There are times "I truely HATE", my job. I deal with mall management, show promoters, and people who are just asses.. lol. Really, it can suck. But then again, sometimes I meet "GREAT" people. Interesting people.. people that make my going to work that day all worth it. Point is, if I didn't work ever and just sat home.. I would meet neither. Overall, later (maybe not on a bad day), you will be happy for the experience.

Take care Mary

Life is what you make it, huh kid? Some people would rather be miserable, but you've learned the secret - you can NEVER replace a minute that has gone by. Make the most of it and enjoy yourself!

it's only when we meet someone like you that we stop and take a look at a real person. I'm sure they are gonna love you! AS for me, I am cutting material and learn how to run credit cards a check thru a computer that is beyond me.... I will say, " I'm sorry I am so slow, this is new to me" Most folks are patient, however the young women glare and I can read their little minds.. " Lord, why is this ole lady working here if she is so slow" Makes me laugh.

Sometimes a smile is all someone needs to have a better day. You are right in saying that you have a job, because one of my friends has been applying all over and only got a job where she cleans a bank (that takes up to three or four hours at times) but only gets paid for two hours. Good luck with packing and moving. I know it sucks, but you are establishing a new home!

"if I can make one person smile while they are in my line, that makes my day."

That is a great goal, Mary. The world would be a better place if everyone had your attitude!!!!!

Love pay day for sure. You have the right attitude. If you can make people smile and give them a smile in return, you're there for a reason. Who knows, you just might make someone's day! Love ya.

Working with the public can really be a wonderful thing, and you seem to be experiencing the positives of it. I know I love it. Some people don't have the same feelings about working witht he public.

I'm glad that your enjoying what you do. As long as you like it, that's half the battle I think. If you can pass along your good feelings to others that's great too. Keep up the good work

You are going to be one that makes a "difference"! - I LOVE finding a cashier that smiles and talks to me - It makes me want to continue going to that store. I just can't express how important customer service is to a business!! Great Job Mary!
ps... I missed you - Hope all is well, and I'll try and read backwards and catch up on all you are doing!

Great post and congratulations on getting that job. I have just started a new job too, and know exactly what you mean.

I always think of employees in Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and the like as being "under orders" to be friendly. It was expected when I worked the meat counter at a grocery in a small town, although we didn't have any mandatory lines. The last time I got into a lively chat with two young ladies at Walmart (one was bagging groceries) I got home without my weed killer. But I could see that they were honestly into running their mouthes, and lets be honest, well, on he other hand, lets not in case Donna reads your blog. But based on this post, if the cashier is friendly, I'll reciprocate, since she's (he sometimes) isn't "under orders". Good post!

Wait till you start getting your 'regulars!' It's a lot of fun. I have this one lady that comes to my line every time she shops at the store. We always greet each other and talk a bit before going onto the next customer.

working is a necesary evil. I never thought I'd miss it but I do. Work makes us feel useful and like we are contributing no matter how humble the position is. I know your customers come away saying "what a nice cashier she is". 'Tis good that you are finally getting into yer new house. Moving in one big pain in the tookas, isn't it? Kida's gonna be all right...he's got you and yer hubby for parents.
