Controversial Topics

This morning's paper triggered this post topic. There were three items that struck me as controversial.

In the headlines was an article entitled, "Texting while driving ban a possibility" (not well worded, but you get the message). We all know the dangers. Now we need a law.

Front page: "Last call for alcohol energy drinks?" The drinks in question are caffeinated alcoholic beverages. They may be pulled from store shelves. I think the FDA is ruling this week that caffeine is an unsafe food addditive to alcoholic drinks. It's already been banned in four states. (As an aside, couldn't the FDA really go crazy and ban hundreds of other "bad food additives for us"?)

Then, as a followup to the "Cigarettes kill" packaging, there was a tongue-in-cheek Richard Cohen column about putting the faces of the manufacturers' presidents on the package, instead. Of course, the whole idea is to dissuade people from smoking (which isn't going to work, in my opinion).

It is at this point that I reiterate my mantra: People are Stupid. Here we go again. How many times has the government been forced to pass a law to "make" us do or do not do something for "our own good"? Seat belts come to mind. Now it's texting, drinking, and smoking.

We know all three are bad for us, but we can't force ourselves to stop or quit. Big bad government has to step in. Little wonder so many Republicans (and others) rail against "socialism". It's not the governments fault we're so damn stupid. Those people that text, drink, and smoke aren't going to be happy--more laws to prevent them from being individualistic. I understand their plight, but I say to hell with them. Let them go kill themselves. It will help the gene pool.

Next up? Gun control. And you know what will hit the fan. It has before, and will again. Pictures of death on a cigarette package is nothing compared to the outrage gun control legislation will produce. In my lifetime?

One more thing. Have you been watching ABC (Diane Sawyer) evening news this week? Great reports on China. More on this later.

Good post Randy. It makes me think of how ridiculous it is to have to waste money to ban people from texting & driving... yet I cannot buy a SINGLE package of bacon that doesn't have sodium nitrate added to it. THAT outta be against the law.

I guess I count on laws to protect me from stupid people, so at least I can sue them if their stupidity injures me, or they can be locked up where no one else can be injured. Of course, the stupid will continue to injure themselves in many ways. Unfortunately for everybody, stupid just took over the House of Representatives.
comment by marta on Nov 17, 2010 10:04 PM ()
That's another reason these laws have to be passed--to protect the innocent. If we only knew how many sleepy, drunk, drugged, texting (etc.) drivers are out there. Scares the bejabbers out of me! Be ever vigilant.

A law on distracted driving is about to pass here (texting,
GPS, reading, cellphones, doing makeup, etc).
comment by crazylife on Nov 17, 2010 9:36 PM ()
Yeah, we got one too. Understand, my human delivers pizza. Her employer requires her to program her GPS and call customers for information after leaving the store. Distracted driving? "Just do it at a red light." Are they going to pay her fine if she gets a ticket? Of course not; get any form of traffic ticket and you get fired. All the legislation means is that now instead of holding the GPS at eye level where she can at least see the road if not concentrate on it, she now has to hold it down in her lap where the cops can't see. And she has to look down at it. I'm glad cats can't drive, because that just doesn't make sense to me.

It's coming quickly here, too. States first, then the whole country (?). Wonder if I can apply lip balm while driving?

I agree with you Randy, let the idiots keep doing stupid things that get them killed. I don't care how much money the government pours into these public safety announcements people will act irresponsibly. We had an incident here last spring where a young girl was killed while driving...her cell phone was still in her hand. Phone records validated she was texting at the time of the accident. This happened two weeks after she graduated from high school. Government needs to butt out...ultimately people need to learn to be responsible for their own stupidity.

Experience is the best teacher. We've learned Prohibition laws didn't work. I'm rethinking my use of the word "stupid" to describe us. Perhaps gullible is better. Maybe obstinate for some. In any case, I'm fairly disgusted.

We have gun legislation. It has not gone over well. At all.

I still maintain that these sorts of issues are mostly used as distractions to keep the general public from looking at the real issues in our backyards. But what do I know?

Good post. And way to turn your brain on.
comment by juliansmom on Nov 17, 2010 4:19 PM ()
You're going to have to explain "in our backyards". What IS going on there? I think what goes on IN our own houses is shocking. We just don't know the extent of it. Ignorance is bliss?

I am sad that states are banning the caffeinated alcoholic drinks... I happen to like one of em! And yes, I smoke - but plan on quitting by NYE! Annnnd yes I have texted and driven... and I hit (tapped) the car in front of me while at a stop light and texting. I guess I am lucky I haven't died yet???
comment by kristilyn3 on Nov 17, 2010 1:41 PM ()
Kristi, you have every right to smoke and drink whatever, to your heart's delight! I would be angry if I couldn't drink wine, or, in years past, couldn't smoke my pipe. Just don't tell me I can't. I quit smoking when I realized it was bad for me (and my children). I didn't need a law or threats. We're both smart enough to know what's right and wrong. By the way, why wait to quit?

I really don't like cell phones. I have a jitterbug so that I can see
to dial without glasses. I just don't see the necessity for keeping up
with every move that your family makes.
comment by elderjane on Nov 17, 2010 10:28 AM ()
I'm not against cell phones or texting, etc. I just don't own one. I have my reasons, but I imagine you know what they are.
reply by solitaire on Nov 18, 2010 5:57 AM ()
Just recently I saw this application that parents can put on cell phones where the phone becomes inoperable when it reaches a certain speed. Pretty nifty idea. Shame common sense isn't also an application that can be downloaded onto people.
comment by kjstone on Nov 17, 2010 10:08 AM ()
Not a bad idea. I think you've said the magic words--common sense. People simply lack it. (They're still stupid!)
reply by solitaire on Nov 18, 2010 5:54 AM ()
anyone for a weed.this is supposed to help the pain?
Your right let them do what they want and then kill himself.
But the sad part is innocent people get harm and killed
You would think that they spend some time to end the war and stop spending money.Enough of the handout.
That is why Dem lost so many seats in congress.
Will see the first of the year/
comment by fredo on Nov 17, 2010 9:39 AM ()
You're right, Fredo. We spend our nation's money on some pretty weird things. We have mixed up priorities. Oh, how I wish I was "King for a Day"!
reply by solitaire on Nov 18, 2010 5:51 AM ()
I agree with you, people are stupid, and it's okay by me if the texting fools have car wrecks just so long as they don't take out some innocent people in the process. Instead of car pool lanes there should be designated lanes on the freeway for Idiots who want to text and talk on the cell phone at 65 mph.
comment by troutbend on Nov 17, 2010 9:13 AM ()
Of course it's more than just simple stupidity. It angers me that laws have to be passed in the first place. Or incentives: farmers have to be paid to prevent erosion. Otherwise, they continue to abuse the land that earns them a living. Greed or stupidity or ignorance? Or all three.
reply by solitaire on Nov 18, 2010 5:48 AM ()
Oh and here I thought you were going to talk about porn, sex, S & M, etc!
You mean smoking, texting, alcohol are 'controversial subjects---STILL?
comment by greatmartin on Nov 17, 2010 8:18 AM ()
Controversial subjects will forever be with us. Aren't we still debating evolution? I didn't mention gay marriage or "don't ask don't tell". The list goes on.
reply by solitaire on Nov 18, 2010 5:44 AM ()
I think that might be left up to us, Martin.

"...but I say to hell with them. Let them go kill themselves. It will help the gene pool" I agree.
comment by jondude on Nov 17, 2010 8:08 AM ()
Guess I am one of the stupid people cause I do smoke. I often wonder about people who not only text as they drive, but feel like they must get to that cell phone every time it rings- as if they were obligated to respond to every call, every text message.
comment by dragonflyby on Nov 17, 2010 7:02 AM ()
Actually, one of my points is "live and let live". If you want to smoke, you go right ahead. Nothing personal. My gripe is legislating against such things. A bar shouldn't be forced to ban smoking, for example. If I don't want to inhale second-hand smoke, then I won't go in. Now an elevator......
Perhaps, I should not have used the word "stupid". Addicted? Stubborn? Rebelious?
