60 Minutes and Nat. Geo.

Bear with me on this post. I'm liable to go anywhere with it.

First, I must comment on two terrific TV shows I watched last night. 60 minutes featured a Medal of Honor recipient. Very moving and inspirational. Heart breaking, too. I really hate war--these recent ones in particular. How tragic the outcomes.

Then I watched "Great Migrations" on the National Geographic channel. Amazing photography of remarkable events in the animal world. They forgot one great migration: retirees flooding to Florida in the winter.

While my cold is about gone, I just read (Dr. Mercola) that exercise is the best way to avoid catching colds. We get an average of 2-4 colds per year (!), but exercising will decrease that number. Evidently, my body didn't get that memo. The article also stated that hydrogen peroxide in the ears, at the onset of a cold, will cut down on the severity of the cold. Don't know why, but it works. Hmmm.

Went to town yesterday to get some groceries. I hear Aldi is rapidly expanding store openings all over the U.S., as people are finally discovering how cheap food is there. I've extolled their virtues for years, saving thousands of dollars.
I also went to the library for books and their annual art fair. I perused, but didn't find anything to my liking--at least in my price range. I usually buy something to support the library. Wait 'til next year.

Then I spent over an hour with my father, watching the Indy Colts, and touring his new house-to-be. He may be moving in within two weeks. He's pretty excited about it all, which, for his age (92), is heart warming. Then my sister will have "his" (old) house to herself. Plus, they'll be out of each other's hair. It's been a strained relationship, lately.

Later today, I get my hair cut. My June "summer butch" is all grown out, so it's time for a trim. I'm also going to gather persimmons (from cousin's yard) to turn into pulp. Not one of my favorite chores, but I love pers. pudding and bread for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yesterday, I made an apple crisp with apple butter mixed in. Oh yes!

You have converted me to Aldi's. However some name brands are better like
pledge and their turkey breasts suck.I can hardly wait to get their circular on Wed. morning. We purchased our generator there and they have
nice sturdy folding tables and other things.
comment by elderjane on Nov 16, 2010 11:29 AM ()
Their Thanksgiving turkeys are delicious. I seldom buy meat at Aldi, a) because I infrequently eat meat, and b) I like IGA's freshly cut meat. I feel guilty that I don't support my local IGA more, but their prices are way too high.

Oh, I would probably drive you nuts if you knew me in real life. Hm. Maybe I already do.

My haircuts are free!

I don't think Aldi exists in Canada. At least not in Ontario. Too bad.
comment by juliansmom on Nov 16, 2010 10:29 AM ()
Oh, I KNOW you would drive me crazy (ier)! We'll just keep our relationship on a platonic basis. It's not worth getting involved just for a free haircut!

We don't have Aldi here in Las Vegas or Colorado, perhaps some day. Maybe the Fresh 'n Easy markets owned by the British Tesco chain that have sprung up in Las Vegas are striving to be the Aldis of the west. We haven't been in awhile, I'd better go see if their prices are jaw-dropping low.
comment by troutbend on Nov 16, 2010 10:09 AM ()
You really don't have to be concerned about saving a few nickles and dimes, do you? I don't either, but it's in my blood.
reply by solitaire on Nov 17, 2010 5:19 AM ()
The colts are hurting as many of the players are injured.
Surely New England can take care of this matter.
What kind of money are we talking on the bet.
comment by fredo on Nov 16, 2010 9:58 AM ()
No money on the bet, but perhaps an overnight bed if either of us ever venture to the others state! Colts win and I get to visit you some day, and vice versa.

My SW@#$%$Florida phrase is my own. It's how from now on I will refer to this intellectual wasteland. When MyBloggers censors, it only uses xxxx. Mine is more colorful, yes? Meanwhile, I did Google Aldi's. The nearest one is 60 plus miles away. Not going to be useful to me. I do have BJ's though and use it for things I can store or use right away.

I didn't know your dad was moving into yet another house. Does this mean your sister is going to be living in the house that used to be his for many years that he bought back when he was living in the nursing home and moved into a couple of years ago?
comment by troutbend on Nov 15, 2010 9:38 PM ()
In a word, yes. You have a good memory. Dad's got it all figured out. And if Barb ever decides to move out, we'll sell the house and split the money three ways. Buying the house back was quite the investment by my father.

'Aldi' is owned by a German, whil teowners brother, owns another store called 'Lidl' (pronounced Leedle). They started off working together with 'Lidl' but, they had an arguement and they went their seperate ways - each have expanded throughout the UK. Mostly they hae German/Italian brands - which are FABULOUS - often, beating 'named' brands in taste and quality. Namedbrands areoccasionally purchasedby tem - usually at knock down prices. Both stores havebeen in the UK for over 10 years easily! Good stores

I have a keyboard I'm not using. Come and get it! I knew Aldi was German. That might be another reason Americans have an aversion to it. We're stupid. And because they're stupid, I don't even try to argue politics or religion with them. No wonder I'm somewhat of a loner.
reply by solitaire on Nov 16, 2010 6:09 AM ()
Please excuse the erors in the spelling department - it is my 'keyboard' - I have to check every word I have written, for the missing letters and spacing (in this reply, there were 6 errors alone)

Thought "60 Minutes" was outstanding, too. The segment on currently unregulated shale natural gas fracking was very troubling and its damage to water sources/wells/aquifers very alarming — another gift from Dick Cheney's lobbying and Halliburton's greed. Uggh. Time for more fighting letters to Congress.
The piece on the Medal of Honor brought me to tears. War is truly hell.
Good to know "Great Migrations" aired. I previewed some of it online, and the photography is fabulous. Hope it airs in full online soon.
Seems like I need to find myself an ALDI store!

I've been extolling the virtues of Aldi for years. Many people turn their noses up at it (see my reply to Kristi). I've seen many wealthy people shop there. I try not to miss 60 Minutes--one of my favorite TV shows. When I turned the TV off Sun night, it was on Nat. Geo channel. So when I turned it back on Mon., it was still there. I got hooked on a special about Hillary Clinton's whirlwind trip to Pakistan and the Middle East. Very informative on what goes on behind closed doors--the preparation involved, etc. There's good TV out there--if one can just find it.

I just read that today about colds and exercise... interesting that YOU woul d ever get one! I used to live near an Aldi and shopped there on occasion. For some reason I can't get it outta my head that their food is old or something... I mean how else is it so cheap???
comment by kristilyn3 on Nov 15, 2010 11:32 AM ()
Yes, and I'll be darned if I can figure out how and where I picked up this cold. Aggravating! As for Aldi's prices, I think a lot of people have the mindset "you get what you pay for". So if it's cheap, it must be bad. Believe me, it's not! Low overhead: No fancy shelves, cart rent, self bag, bulk stock, etc., keeps the prices low. Try it.

I loved the way the kid classified himself as mediocre!
We just got our first Aldi store here in South Florida--will ahve to give it a try.
Ummm--I don't exercise and I haven't had a cold in years!
Ah peroxide--I've been using a solution of peroxide and salt as a mouth rinse for years and years--hey, maybe that's why I don't get colds!?!?!
I get a crewcut twice a year and that's it.
comment by greatmartin on Nov 15, 2010 9:41 AM ()
I have peroxide so old, it's lost its potency. If you're a finicky shopper/gourmet eater, you probably won't take to Aldi. It's pretty basic. But why spend $4.50 for corn flakes when you get the same stuff for $1.25 at Aldi? I'm glad you watch(ed) 60 minutes. I don't have to tell you to "take it easy", do I?
reply by solitaire on Nov 16, 2010 5:52 AM ()
I saw 60 minutes last night and found this very moving.
Then watch my New England Pat finally gun ho.
Brady gave the players a pep talk and they got all excitied by this.
Should do this more often. The team was great.Never heard of Aidi?Sounds like a drug store.
comment by fredo on Nov 15, 2010 9:07 AM ()
I bet you have an Aldi nearby. Check it out. Everything's cheap. Patriots vs. Colts next weekend! Any bets?

ALDI rocks!
comment by jondude on Nov 15, 2010 8:22 AM ()
Shhhh. It's getting too crowded the way it is.
reply by solitaire on Nov 16, 2010 5:45 AM ()
I don't know what Aldi is.But I do like cheap groceries. And Persimmons. And apple crisp. And apple butter. That art fair sounds fun. I hope I still have something to get excited about when I'm 92. I give good hair cuts. And I hate war. A lot.
comment by juliansmom on Nov 15, 2010 6:31 AM ()
So what are you trying to tell me? We have things in common? I got my persimmons and will work on them today. Haircut cost went up $2. Bet you're cheaper than $12. And you don't know what you're missing not having an Aldi grocery store around. Best bargain in food--besides growing ones own. Nice paintings, but I didn't buy anything.
reply by solitaire on Nov 16, 2010 5:44 AM ()
I have to Google Aldi and find out if there are any in SW@#$#Florida. So your sister will be on her own and won't have anyone to complain to and whine to ... perfect. My guess is she'll be coming over a lot.
comment by tealstar on Nov 15, 2010 6:14 AM ()
Were you censored in your SW Florida word? Surely you have Aldi down there. I rather doubt if Barb comes out much--only to keep recovering her belongings from when she lived with me. She complains a lot, but is not the whiner her twin is. I just grit my teeth and listen.
reply by solitaire on Nov 16, 2010 5:39 AM ()
We finally Have Aldi in Florida- Quite a few, actually. I have not eaten anything with persimmons in it for decades and have forgotten what they taste like.
comment by dragonflyby on Nov 15, 2010 5:51 AM ()
I gathered a whole bunch of them (pers). And the tree is still loaded. I've got my work cut out for me today. I'll save some for you. It freezes well.
