Second Fall

I started delivering a weekly newspaper, again, back in February. It takes me approximately an hour and a half, once a week to deliver the 77 papers on my route, depending on the weather. Cold and windy doesn't seem to take as long as heatwave and no breeze. I don't need the $30.80 a month. Stay-at-home-moms or retired folks might call it their mad money. I call it my yarn money. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Getting back to the fall; it was sometime in July when I was about half way through my route and delivering to a lovely house with a well kept yard. The weather was hot and their flip-flop style sprinkler was watering the lawn as well as their painted sidewalk. I walked through the shower, enjoying the cool spray, pushed the paper through their mail slot, turned, took two more steps and my left foot slide, on the slick, wet pavement, right out from under me. I went down hard on my hip and hobbled through the rest of my route. It took considerably more than an hour and a half that day. Today I took my second tumble. It had rained during the night and water had puddled. I had just put the paper in the mailbox, turned and started down the painted concrete steps. On the second step from the bottom my foot slipped right off the step and I ended up on my hands and knees on their sidewalk. I have a lovely bruise where my right shin hit the edge of the bottom step. My left arm hurts as does my left hip. I was about ten minutes into my route when this happened but I managed to finish by bagging the papers and tossing them up onto porches instead of climbing up and down everyone's steps. If people must paint their steps and sidewalks I do wish they would use a rubber based paint or add ground walnut shells for traction. If I break something you better believe I will sue these morons.
