Recycling Wool

Yes, I do recycle. I recycle newspapers, cardboard, plastics and tin cans. I also recycle wool whenever the opportunity arises.
Here is my latest recycling project.

While rummaging through the moving boxes of old clothes I came across this old pullover of mine. I am still in the process of washing the old clothes before I give them to charity so when I read the washing instructions for this sweater and discovered it was made of 100% Virgin Shetland Wool I knew it was a keeper. I washed it carefully on the gentle cycle and hung it in the shade outside.

After it had thuroughly dried I was dismayed to see the moths had been feasting on it. Not to worry though. Most of the holes were on the front where the yarn had been cut up to make the argyle pattern.

I then set to work searching for the teeny weeny ends to begin unraveling the back, collar and sleeves. It took me all afternoon and well past dinner to unravel the whole thing.

I rolled all the reclaimed wool into one ball. It weighed in at 160gm/5.7 oz. It isn't much. Maybe I could knit a pair of gloves, a scarf, a hat or baby sweater.

Then I saw my 100gr ball of Noro sock yarn and a package of turquoise glass beads I had recently purchased and decided on a shawl. This one is my own design so I can sell it. I'm running out of room in my shawl dresser.

Just colour me green.

How odd. I just noticed that the teal carpet makes the grey wool look grey but the beigh carpet (that looks grey) makes the wool look teal coloured.

Amazing. That is recycling genius. Ed, who has trouble changing his ways from the way "we used to do things" calls me the recycle Nazi because I am always retrieving his stuff from the wrong bin.
