New Computer

Well, not exactly. For a long time our computer's behaviour has been rather erratic. One day it's working fine and the next it is soooooo sloooooow I can play three or four solitaire games while waiting for a page to download. I don't know if it makes any difference but I use the refresh/reload button a lot too. Pretty poor performance for high speed cable. For months DH kept saying there was something wrong with the computer and we should take it in to be fixed. I on the other hand suspected it was our server, Shaw Cable, that was the root of our problems. My argument of "when a computer is broken one day, it doesn't miraculously fix itself the next" finally sank in and DH made arrangements for a service technician (cable guy) to come out and check.....whatever they're supposed to check. First off, the cable guy says our modem is one a bad batch that allows electrical feedback to interfere. He dumbed his explanation down for me to: the more electrical appliances in use in our area, the slower the computer speed. He disconnected the old modem and gave us a nice new one. Then he phoned someone and told them to check our line. They called back a short time later and said there is definitely something wrong with our line. So the cable guy goes outside to see what he can see. Apparently, in 1994, someone from Shaw Cable had replaced the old cable that runs from the power pole to our house but had connected that new cable to an ancient one in the wall of the house. So, he replaced all the old cables with brand spanking new ones and phoned for another check on our line. The readings were up where they should be and the computer is working very well indeed. It's almost like having a new computer. The only draw back is that I don't get to play as much solitaire as I used to.
