Simplification Redux

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: give me the simple life. I finally made good--well, semi-good--on my threat.

I've been thinking about "unplugging" my television. There are very few shows I enjoy, and many more I watch--only to keep me company in the evening. It has become more aggrevating than entertaining.

So yesterday, I called DISH Network to cancel my subscription for pay TV. That was my first step to breaking the television watching habit. Another reason for canceling was to save $70/mo. Money down a rat hole. It's not that I can't afford it. It's the principle. I loathe waste (and remember the phrase: "TV--the vast wasteland"?).

I told the nice young lady why I was dropping DISH. She didn't try to persuade me to quit, but mentioned they have a very basic unadvertized package for only $15/mo. That includes Food and MSNBC, my two favorite channels, plus all the local (Indianapolis) networks. And this isn't just an "introductory" promotion. I succumbed to the enticement. I signed up.

It's a start. Quitting TV cold turkey wasn't going to be easy. I can now be less selective--I have no choice. No temptation to flip to ESPN or any other "cable" sports (no Cubs!). Simplification can be a good thing. Stay tuned (pun intended).

Have a good weekend (assuming the world doesn't end!).

Good for you. If I could get DISH for $15 a month, I might give up my rabbit ears. I hadn't watched for over 10 years and got so much more done! But living alone got to be too quiet and a couple of years ago I started watching again. As I had feared it's on most of the time.

I'm proud of you also. Last night after nothing happened with the rapture
Our son, myself an hubby talked all night. No TV, cell phone or computer.

That's the only drawback for me. I live alone. More radio music!

For what I pay for cable, I could have a new wardrobe. And I watch very little television.

I'm already thinking of ways to spend my new found $55/mo.!!

Cable TV is a racket and a money pit. I have an over-the-air digital antenna for TV and get all my local TV/network TV and two area PBS channels free. I couldn't live without PBS, and each station has three free over-the-air digital channels — wonderful stuff 24/7. I also like to have local news and weather on TV. We have a lot of really bad weather/tornadoes here in Northwest Ohio, and nothing beats the local TV enhanced radar images at times like that. All other programming is available online. By the way, you might find a real deal for fiber optic DSL when your current slow-as-molasses dial-up contract ends.

I have a kitchen TV hooked up to a digital box, also. I like the 24/7 radar on the third station channel option. Other good stuff, too. It's just uncomfortable sitting in a kitchen table chair for any length of time! And thanks for the DSL tip.

Good move! You could apply the money saved to getting DSL access.
comment by troutbend on May 20, 2011 6:14 PM ()
Hmmm. Where have I heard that before?!! As soon as my current contract is over, I will. Promise.

You can get almost any TV channel (other than movies) now on your computer, without the satellite or cable cost, providing you have fast telephone DSL. I regularly watch baseball in a window on the second monitor while working on the laptop computer. HGTV, History Channel, CNN, English Premier League soccer - All of those and more. It is a competitive factor driving them to stream live TV on the web.

My dial-up computer service is excruciatingly slow. As I said to Dottie, I just may have to get DISH's internet service. But not because I can watch more TV shows. I'm trying to get away from that!!!!

I have been thinking about disconnecting cable. Just a very basic package is more than I want to pay. I hesitate to change my email because I have over 3000 contacts due to the Auxiliary, and changing my email would be a real problem.

DISH provides internet service for $15/mo. Once my current phone line subcription is over (March), I think I'll make the switch. I don't have as many email contacts as you, so that won't be too difficult. Then I'll be "up to speed"--literally!

Have you really said that a thousand times??
Good move--I pay $31 for 63 channels and watch, maybe,6 but it would be more expensive if I got a smaller package.

I proudly display a small framed saying: "I've told you a million times, never exaggerate!" Who, me? Sounds like you have a good bargain for $31.

We are approaching disconnect cable TV...ASAP good for you

I watched the news last night, then turned in off and listened to music (classical) on the radio! I was proud of myself.

Oh that sounds nice, two of your favorites for so much less a month. Good for you! I'll stay tuned!

The hardest part is weaning myself from TV. Like I said, it's a step.
