Human Apocalypse

Here I go again.

As we all know, Harold Camping's prediction of the "apocalypse" was wrong. Gee, what a shock.

I don't have any idea how many "believers" drained their savings accounts or gave away earthly belongings in preparation for the big event.

I don't know what explanations are being given in response to the big non-event. I did read that a Robert Fitzpatrick of Staten Island said he was surprised when the six o'clock hour simply came and went. Evidently, he spent his own money on "end of the world" advertising.

Like Fitzpatrick, some believers expressed confusion, while others reassured each of their faith. "Many followers said the delay was a further test from God to persevere in their faith".

I don't know about you, but I tire of hearing the same old song and dance about why things didn't go according to plan (i.e., Scripture). Or that God works is strange and mysterious ways. Or that wee mortals are incapable of understanding the "mind of God". (yes, "wee")

Admittedly, I'm not the smartest guy in the world. But I have long questioned the intelligence of the masses of my fellow man. Are we really that ignorant--dare I say stupid? Is it simply naivity? Is the figurative "blind faith" more literal than I suspect? I don't know what percent of Americans fell for Camping's prediction. I'm hoping it's miniscule, and that it was the media's fault that the apocalypse subject became the "headline" that it did.

It is true that I occasionally cast aspersions on my species. I watch and listen to subjects being interviewed on television about whatever is in the news. Invariably, these people are disgusting examples of the human race. Need I describe them? Slobs, unshaven (men and women!), bad language, opinionated, trashy, and just plain dumb. They're everywhere! Beer drinking, hats on backwards, tatooed, foulmouthed cretins. There. I've said it. And they aren't the ones that believe in all this apocalypse crap because they don't give a damn! Give them Nascar and a Big Mac.

Honestly, I try to be understanding, compassionate, and forgiving. But when the reality of ignorance slaps you in the face, it's hard to ignore. (I just realized the root of the word "ignorance"!) And I realize I'm making vast generalities here. Plus I'm not running for office, so I can post my diatribe without retribution (unlike Obama and his "sticking to guns and religion" remark several years ago) . Yet, I maintain the lunatic fringe is massive. It makes one question evolution: shouldn't we be getting smarter? I foresee the "apocalypse" stemming from within, not natural forces.

And I didn't even know about it until people started saying "hey, we are still here!" I like "the lunatic fringe is massive" statement. One of the lunatics works at the library. As in religious lunatic. I wouldn't do what she told me, so she now keeps away from me. Probably thinks I'm the devil.

If not the devil, the anti-christ. I was called that by my ex-wife (a religious fanatic)! Little wonder we divorced.

Fortunately we all live in our own little bubbles and don't have to
interact with swamp people. These people cause a lot of harm like the
nut that burned the Koran.

Yes. My bubble is living alone--and now, cutting back on television viewing. I like the "swamp" people term!

I agree with Jondude, jerms and Teal, and with your last line.

Charlatans, soothsayers, prophets. They are all manipulative felons in my book. People can be so easily swayed by mythology. It has been that way since early mankind stood upright and first saw the stars.
comment by jondude on May 22, 2011 5:36 PM ()
And why do newspapers still print astrology forecasts? Obviously, people still believe in that crap. Another black mark.

Fortunately, this was a very fringe group and very minuscule. I, for one, did not sell one thing. I called my dad this morning and teased him about it. He said, Well, if it happened, we're both still here. The "rationalizations" have only just begun. I cannot wait to hear some of them for myself.
comment by jerms on May 22, 2011 2:13 PM ()
No,he's not one of them, but I was just trying to be funny with him on a Sunday morning.

Teased your father? Like he's "one of them"? Sorry you have to put up with me and my opinions. This is my form of "release".

Jay, my late first husband, once told me that only 10 percent of the world population had any smarts and, as Bergan Evans, the author, wrote, "An intelligent being lives in the modern world like a spy in an enemy camp." I feel like Arte Johnson on Laugh In, peering through the ferns and muttering "Very interesting."

And it makes me wonder who's in charge. If it wasn't for the fact that Obama actually got elected, I would be sure it's the 90% that's in control of our society and culture (and government). Perhaps there's hope.

I really like your last sentence and I would have to agree with you! Well said.

Thank you Kristi. I sorta like it too!

Okay, I solved it--here is your BIG problem!!
"I watch and listen to subjects being interviewed on television about whatever is in the news"
STOP THE STUPIDITY!!!!!

As I previously posted, I've cut way back on my TV watching. I'm getting smarter!
