Pills for Good Health

As many of you know, I'm sort of a health nut. I got it from my mother. (It's a shame cancer killed her.)

I'm fairly thin because I watch what I eat and exercise daily. The "10 best foods for you" are eaten with regularity. That doesn't mean I don't occasionally fall off the wagon. But on the whole, I'm careful about my choices.

I don't supplement my diet with vitamins because I make sure I get them with the variety of foods I eat. However, I do take several pills each day to assist or prevent certain maladies (if that's the correct word here).

One pill is red yeast rice (1200mg). I've taken it for over two years now, and my cholesterol (LDH) has dropped considerably according to my blood tests. I had been taking Lipitor, but began having hip joint aches. I like this natural supplement.

Another dietary supplement I take is Glucosamine--twice a day. In my humble opinion, it's done wonders for my hand arthritis and knee joints. The "knots" in my palms are virtually gone. I could barely grip a golf club before I started taking this magic pill.

The last pill (besides an aspirin) I take is ginger root (550mg). I started it six months ago and haven't had an "attack" of bowel cramps one time! They say it "promotes digestive health", and I'm a believer.

I'm not prescribing anything here--just informing you on what works for me. Here's to your good health.

Wish I could take Glucosamine, but it contains sulfides. Red yeast rice? Never heard of it, but have to look into it. I started taking Simvastin (Lipitor?) a few months ago. Yes, my hips have recently hurt like heck, but it never occurred to me that it could be caused by a medication. Learn something every day!

I've been taking ginger off and on for over a year now. It was recommended to reduce nausea. Worked well for most of the problems. Now I take it on a prn basis. I also took glucosamine for many years on the recommendation of my pain doc. He said adding anything to it - condroitin, MSM or whatever has no effect so I took it the way you do. He dropped the recommendation a while ago because it can upset the digestive tract. I did notice a drop in my pain when I was taking it, but decided to drop it when I had all the nausea. I also take 4g fish oil gel caps for my arthritis, per my pain doc.
Now, I give the glucosamine to my arthritic dogs and fish oil to all three for their coats.
As for cost, I wait for the 2 for 1 sales at Walgreens.
Good topic, Randy.

Well, this was an interesting article with interesting comments, as well. I haven't heard of some of these things, and my husband is a health nut. He wants to live forever... well, at least not die for a real long time. I'll mention some of them to him, especially the red yeast rice. Thanks for the info...

Your tips are good, and I don't doubt your experiences for a second, but I have to check everything because of my severe fibromyalgia. And expense. By the way, here's the initial results in the research I found. Glucosamine is not that effective in patients with fibromyalgia, unless the person has arthritis or joint problems as well. (I don't.) I don't think I'll be switching to red rice yeast either, not when I can get a 90-day supply of Lipitor for $3 bucks. And I enjoy fresh ginger a lot, so maybe I won't need the ginger supplement. But I'll remember it if I do!
Thanks again for the recommendations! You are a sweetie.

I will have to try the Glucosamine Condroitine thing. How long does it take for it to work?

Good tips, Randy. I will recommend the red yeast to Ed, who is on lipitor. I personally have no problem with cholesterol. I used to take glucosamine and condroitin years ago and stopped because of the expense. However, I think I should go back on. I take vitamin supplements -- 9 different kinds a day. For women, especially, try this for your fingernails -- one or two softgel Flaxseed oil capsules daily -- yyou won't need a manicure for weeks.

A few years ago when my ex boyfriend got back into skateboarding, I warned him that he wasn't a teenager anymore and should take glucosamine supplements. As luck would have it, he busted up his elbow and required surgery. Later on, his physiotherapist exclaimed that he was the fastest healing patient she had ever seen. He credited the glucosamine, to which she said, "Well,I don't know what that is... but you sure healed up quick."

Red yeast rice. I'm going to give that a try. My cholesterol is, at times, "borderline", just like everything else in my life. My wife takes glucosamine for her knees. (She used to be a cheerleader. Knees weren't meant to take that abuse!) She swears by the stuff. I also have an eight-year-old German Shepherd with bad hips. After being on glucosamine for two years now, she is running all over the pastures like a pup.

I boil one compound leaf of Azadirachta Indica in a litre of water, then dilute it 1/4 in water each morning and it seems to have cured my vertigo.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into getting some of that for the cholesterol for Mr. Tbend.

I was taking 9 pills daily for years. Somebody suggested I cut the dosage, After two days, I was racked with pain.

Glucosamine Condroitin, 2 times a day. Wonderful pill! Sometimes they have a deal at Costco where you can buy two big bottles for the price of one. I have enough to last a year and a half!
