Update 2 on Renovations
I love our carpenter, Herman. He spent one day getting the stairs to the basement ready to be covered with linoleum. Apparently the crap builder of our house neglected to put risers on the stairs so the cheap original owners tacked on some thin scraps of wood and pieces of old lino as risers. Herman has nailed on proper risers, new treads and raised the skirt.
Before Herman:

After Herman:

He has put in a sub floor between the kitchen and laundry room and ripped out the old sub floor in the dining area. When we bought the house the crap builder had used single pane glass for the door to the deck. Every morning, in the Winter, I had to wipe all the moisture off the glass until we, eventually, had it replaced with a new, double pane, sliding glass door. However, before we replaced the door the excess moisture was causing an unseen problem. I think it may have some bearing on my allergy problem.
Mildew and mould growing under the old sub floor:

Anybody out there know what we can do to fix this? Can I spray it with something (TSP?) to kill the mould and lay the laminate on top of it or does the mouldy floor have to be cut out and replaced?
If it does need to be replaced, at least I've got Herman.
