Goin’ Green Shopping Bag



MATERIALS: 250g/9 oz worsted weight cotton
1 set of 4.5 mm/7 US double pointed needles
1 4.5mm/7 US 24 in circular needle
1 6mm/10 US 24 in circular needle
1 row counter
1 size 4 crochet hook
1 darning needle

Size: 86cm/34 in diameter X 31cm/12 in deep

TENSION: 20 sts & 24 rows with 4.5mm/7 US needles = 10 cm/4 inches

M1 = make 1 stitch by picking up yarn bar between stitches and knitting into the back of it.
Yf = Yarn forward

Vertical Lace Trellis
Round 1: Knit.
Round 2: (Yf, k2tog) repeat to end of round.
Round 3: Knit.
Round 4: (Ssk, yf) repeat to end of round.

Bag Bottom –
Cast on 8 sts and divide on DPNs thus: 1st needle – 2 sts
2nd needle – 3 sts
3rd needle – 3 sts
Rounds 1 & 2: Knit.
Round 3: (K1, m1) 8 times. (16 sts on needles)
Rounds 4 & 5: Knit.
Round 6: (K1, m1) 16 times. (32 sts on needles)
Rounds 7 & 8: Knit.
Round 9: (K2, m1) 16 times. (48 sts on needles)
Rounds 10 & 11: Knit.
Round 12: (K3, m1) 16 times. (64 sts on needles)
*When there are enough stitches, change to circular needle.
Rounds 13 & 14: Knit.
Round 15: (K4, m1) 16 times. (80 sts on needle)
Rounds 16 & 17: Knit.
Round 18: (K5, m1) 16 times. (96 sts on needle)
Rounds 19 & 20: Knit.
Round 21: (K6,m1) 16 times. (112 sts on needle)
Rounds 22 & 23: Knit.
Round 24: (K7, m1) 16 times. (128 sts on needle)
Rounds 25 & 26: Knit.
Round 27: (K8, m1) 16 times. (144 sts on needle)
Rounds 28 & 29: Knit.

Bag Sides & Handles-
Purl 1 round, increasing 1 st at end of round.
Seed Stitch for 30 rounds, decreasing 1 st at end of last round.
With larger needle work the 4 rounds of Vertical Lace Trellis, 5 times. Knit 1 round, increasing 1 st at end of round.
With smaller needle Seed Stitch for 20 rounds.
Round 21: Cast off 20 sts. Work Seed Stitch for 62 sts. Cast off 20 sts. Seed Stitch to end of round.
Round 22: Cast on 20 sts. Work Seed Stitch for 62 sts. Cast on 20 sts. Seed Stitch to end of round.
Seed Stitch for 7 more rounds.
Cast off all stitches.

Finishing -
Single crochet around the 20 cast off and cast on sts to reinforce the handles. Weave in ends.
