
MATERIALS: 1 50g/1.75 oz ball worsted weight cotton solid yarn (A)
1 50g/1.75 oz ball worsted weight cotton variegated yarn (B)
1 pair 4.5mm/7 US needles
1 row counter
1 size 4 crochet hook
1 darning needle
Size: 19cm/7.5 in X 19cm/7.5 in
Bib can be made larger by increasing the number of stitches by multiples of 4.
TENSION: 20 sts & 26 rows with 4.5mm/7 US needles = 10 cm/4 inches
Bottom Border -
Cast on 29 stitches.
Rows 1, 3, 5 & 7: Knit.
Rows 2, 4, 6 & 8: Increase 1 stitch, knit to last stitch, increase1 stitch. (37 stitches)
Knit the first and last 4 sts in colour A for side borders.
Work centre pattern as follows -
Rows 9: With Colour B slip 1, (k3, s1) to last st, s1.
Row 10: S1, (p3, s1) to last st, s1.
Row 11: With colour A knit across row.
Row 12: Purl across row.
Row 13: With colour B k2, (s1, k3) to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 14: P2, (s1, p3) to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 15: With colour A knit across row.
Row 16: Knit across row.
Repeat rows 9 - 16 5 more times.
Top Border -
Cut yarn colour B and continue with colour A.
Rows 1, 3, 5 & 7: Knit, decreasing 1 stitch at each end of row.
Row 2, 4 & 6: Knit.
Row 8: Knit across row, casting off the centre 9 sts.
Working on right side of bib, k2tog at outside edge every row and k2tog at neck edge every other row until 1 st remains. Transfer stitch to crochet hook and crochet single chain tie for 25cm/10 inches. Cut yarn and work left side to correspond to right side.
Optional: Crochet single chain around bib for a finished edge.
