Alberni Valley News Deliveries

On Friday I delivered the AV News papers. All 77 of them along with the copious copies of Christmas sales fliers. There was no way I could do my route in one trip. I delivered half of them and then went back home to load up the rest. The weather cooperated and it was a balmy 3C/37F with no wind.

On Saturday I delivered the big, fat Sears catalogues. All 21 of them. They filled my granny cart to the brim. In spite of there only being 21, those 21 were scattered throughout my route so I basically had to walk almost the same distance as I did on Friday. The weather was OK. It had cooled off and although I wore my hand knit wool headband my ears froze before I made it back to the warmth of my hearth and home.

This morning I found the material that I had been promised/warned about. A few weeks ago we (delivery persons) were told we would have a very important delivery to make on Sunday the 20th of December. We weren't told what it was but it was stressed how *important* this particular delivery was and if we couldn't do it we must phone the office and let them know. On Thursday I received a phone call from the newspaper office. She was just checking to make sure I had read the announcement about the "special delivery" and that I could, in fact, undertake this mission of great importance. I said that for the good of mankind I was ready, willing and able to carry out my duties. This very important special delivery turned out to be a 1 1/2 inch high stack of 81 single sheet Future Shop fliers. Why 81 instead of 77? Because they wanted me to deliver to the four houses that have refused to take delivery of the AV News. So, this morning I delivered Future Shop fliers. All 81 of them. I had to fold them three more times to make them sturdy enough to get pushed through letter slots and even then I think most of them just wedged themselves between the outside and the inside slots. What was the weather like? I'm so glad you asked. It was a torrential downpour. Although I carried the fliers in a plastic Walmart bag they got soaked. I discovered that my green rain jacket is not water proof and arrived back home looking and feeling like a cat who had just suffered the indignity of a forced bath.

Now, this isn't the worst of this special delivery. The topper to all of this? There is no Future Shop in Port Alberni!
