Unbelievable Slavery

I was going through the Sunday paper and came upon an article
about slavery going on in Tulsa. It seems that the Pickle
company which makes containment vessels, mostly used in the
oil industry had hired a number of men from India. They were
paid very low wages, housed in a dormitory and an armed guard
was posted at the door. The owner made the mistake of letting
them go to church and after a long time, they confided their
plight to the minister. He was appalled and got them in touch
with an attorney.

There was a picture of the dormitory. It was long and narrow
with just room between the beds to get in. Some were bunks.
there was not a chair, a tv or anything to provide comfort.
The beds were iron and didn't even have blankets. According
to the men, they were fed very little and very poor food.

One of the men has received a settlement of over a million
dollars but the owner, who sold his business to his daughter
and son-in-law for l.7 million dollars says they will not get
a penny and protests that the l.7 million is a fair market
value for his business. This is ridiculous on the face of it because any
business to do with the oil industry commands big bucks.

All of the "slaves" are here legally now, have good jobs and
are making progress towards citizenship. Most do not plan
to sue and didn't want to talk about it.

This is such an egregious violation of human rights. Surely
criminal charges could be filed against Mr. Pickle but
evidently none have.

There was a similar situation involving Chinese acrobats here in Las Vegas a few years ago. I don't know how it came out.

Hard to believe such a thing could be happening in Tulsa. This man should be in prison. Thank goodness the men told their pastor and got away from this terrible situation.

It is so hard to believe that it happened right under our noses.

I agree with all. these business people who are found doing this should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. however, prisons are far better contitions that what those workers were subject to.

yer that's why we need to bring back public flogging pal

It shocked me too.

I did not realized that this was still going on in our country.

Oh my, I didn't either.

Horrific and disgraceful. Pickle is amoral and deserves prosecution big time.

I could not believe this was going on within 80 miles of my home.

Horrible. In Southern California some clothing manufacturers do the same. The have houses packed with foreign seamstresses and operate their 'businesses' as slave owners would. There are raids that set the slaves free, but the owners are seldom prosecuted.

I can't understand why these people are allowed to get away with this. It
is so mean and sleazy to take advantage of these people who have risked so
much to get here. The man who got the judgement was an engineer in India
and Mr. Pickle had him welding.

Slavery, unfortunately, is still a big business even here in the U.S. Millions of people worldwide are held in slavery, and industrialized countries like the US and Great Britain are the favored grounds for those trafficking in sex slaves. It is deplorable that anyone could deny another the right to freedom and individual choices.

I am constantly amazed by how mercenary and cruel some people can be. To be
locked up with an armed guard at the door or to have a sadistic pimp is too
much to bear.

Sometimes I wonder about man's inhumanity towards man.

Amen!

Yes, Mr. Pickle should be prosecuted. I don't know why this is not being done. At least the men involved are now on their way to a better life.

He has taken such unfair advantage of these men. It shocked me to the core.
Evidently, it is more common than I knew.
