I was going through the Sunday paper and came upon an article
about slavery going on in Tulsa. It seems that the Pickle
company which makes containment vessels, mostly used in the
oil industry had hired a number of men from India. They were
paid very low wages, housed in a dormitory and an armed guard
was posted at the door. The owner made the mistake of letting
them go to church and after a long time, they confided their
plight to the minister. He was appalled and got them in touch
with an attorney.
There was a picture of the dormitory. It was long and narrow
with just room between the beds to get in. Some were bunks.
there was not a chair, a tv or anything to provide comfort.
The beds were iron and didn't even have blankets. According
to the men, they were fed very little and very poor food.
One of the men has received a settlement of over a million
dollars but the owner, who sold his business to his daughter
and son-in-law for l.7 million dollars says they will not get
a penny and protests that the l.7 million is a fair market
value for his business. This is ridiculous on the face of it because any
business to do with the oil industry commands big bucks.
All of the "slaves" are here legally now, have good jobs and
are making progress towards citizenship. Most do not plan
to sue and didn't want to talk about it.
This is such an egregious violation of human rights. Surely
criminal charges could be filed against Mr. Pickle but
evidently none have.
