My Take on Sex and Politics

It is true that power is a powerful aphrodisiac. Many young
college girls fall for their middle aged professors and many
politicians cannot resist temptation. I think that it is a
defect in emotional intelligence on the part of the
politicos who risk their marriages and their careers for a
fling. John Edwards learned this to his sorrow.

I do not give a flip what they do in their private lives and
how they conduct themselves in private. What I object to
is the media and how they exploit sexual behavior and
expose the innocent party to the media.

Sex has been around forever. It wasn't just discovered
by the baby boomers. I can just visualize Barbara Walters
picking over every detail of the Weiner scandal with Mrs.
Weiner. There is more to a marriage and a life than
sex and having said that I wouldn't tolerate infidelity
for a minute because it is a breach of trust. Mrs.
Weiner evidently has a different view than I do and
I respect her generosity.

Enough of these sex scandals! The politicians should be
discreet and the media should back off.

Weiner is emotionally immature and impulsive to do have done the crap he's done, so no, I wouldn't want to see him in public office. He is not a person of integrity or trustworthy.

I cannot image any correlation between one's personal sex life and ability to govern, and yes, power is an aphrodisiac. It might concern me if someone abused their position and raped these women or threatened them somehow, but we are talking about acts between consenting adults. Enough already!

I agree. I am sick of hearing about it too. Maybe they could all just knock it off!!!! Well, they could ....

While Mr. Weiner clearly has some obsessive sexual issues, the fact that he chooses to incessantly broadcast them in this wide-open digital age with photos no less, and thinks he is stable enough to run for NYC mayor, which he clearly is not, makes it the voters' business. I am very far from a prude, and it wouldn't matter a whit if he could keep it private. But he tendencies to liking risk and his lack of self-control means to me that he should stay in therapy and not run for office. Why his wife is putting up with this and even supporting his candidacy is beyond me. I think the opportunity to be the mayor of NYC was too tempting to both of them. But it is a foolish effort that will have long-lasting repercussions personally and professionally for both of them.

He definitely lacks the emotional intelligence and stability to run. He is
not a looker and would not be attractive to women without a modicum of
power and influence to balance the scales but of course his ego won't allow
him to see that. I imagine his wife is trying to hang on for the sake of
their baby but it is not worth it. I watched him being so confrontational
and aggressive tonight on the news that it made me ill. What did he think
was going to happen?

I do give a flip what they do in their private lives. If people have poor judgment in their personal lives how can I expect them to do better with the public trust? That said, I can understand how people with superior ambition need superior excitement. I can very easily understand, for example, what Bill did with Monica in the Oval Office. I suppose the goal is balance and discretion.

The best example I can think of the demonstrate the absolute lack of correlation is John Kennedy.

This guy is far too unbalanced for public office and the exhibition he made of himself on tonight's news proved it without a shadow of a doubt. I have
not led a blameless life so I try not to be too quick to judge others.

I'm sure that both political parties have full-time staff looking for ways to smear their opponents. Wouldn't it be refreshing if all that time and money was better directed? Won't ever happen, but we can dream.

The extreme that political candidates go to in their spending is another ill
that should be addressed. Of course so much of it is spent on tv advertising. They really should have a realistic limit on spending.

I liek weinerwurst. Is this guy in the butcher bizness?
comment by hobbie on July 25, 2013 12:48 PM ()
I am afraid you would be disappointed Hobby. His weiner is not for upright
cats like you.

I suspect he was born Anthony Cohen and he changed it to Weiner because he thought that it sounded sexy...
comment by steeve on July 25, 2013 11:53 AM ()
Maybe he should have changed his first name to Richard and gone by the
nickname. Appropriate isn't it!
reply by elderjane on July 25, 2013 3:23 PM ()
what else can they talk about .This is big new for some out there as for me,could care less.
But he is a total jerk if he thinks that he will win the mayorship
comment by fredo on July 25, 2013 9:47 AM ()
I think if 'weiner' refers to any body part on this man, it must be his nose!
reply by dragonflyby on July 26, 2013 2:54 PM ()
He is a total jerk alright. I feel so much empathy for his wife.
reply by elderjane on July 25, 2013 10:58 AM ()
Totally agree ... and it ain't going to stop, so please, all, spare us. However, any splash of coverage by the media on those who are hypocrites -- right wing politicians who come down on sex scandals, who seek to deny abortion rights -- who have skeletons in their closets -- these are fair game.
comment by tealstar on July 25, 2013 8:32 AM ()
I couldn't squeeze all I wanted to say in on my comment on your post so
I had to rant some more. People can be so hypocritical wanting us to
believe their squeaky clean image and vaunting their Christian values and
dallying with whoever is willing. I agree that they are fair game.
