Hate

Have you listened to your neighbors and friends in stores and on the street? There is so much hate filled talk by people who love to spread venom. I am hearing that all hispanics need to be deported or strung up. That our President Elect will be taken care of by the Klan. That all blacks are on welfare on and on.

There was an incident on the cruise ship that sort of illustrated this point. Everyone likes to get off th ship early so Ted and I and about 50 other people formed a line to wait for our color card. We waited an hour but felt that it was worth it to get out early. About 3 minutes before they were to be handed out about 30 people tried to usurp our position in the front of the line. This was met with rage and anger out of all proportion to the crime involved. People are so on edge that this little incident caused a near riot. They didn't succeed but one man kept on lecturing them for 5 minutes. It was my guess that he was ex military, he had a commanding presence and a booming voice.

Why do we find it so hard to tolerate differences of opinion? Or of color, Or of politics. There seems to be a change in the character of the American people. We have become an impatient, on edge , intolerant nation. It seems to me that we have to change this one person at a time.

Yes, Jeri. I think it's a sign of the times. So many are frustrated now with our economy and loss of jobs and high prices (I guess I said that already) that they are taking it out on others. Just the other day I complained about a clerk in a store who was treating me badly. I NEVER complain about clerks... but this wasn't the first time. Well, I should have let it go...

No sense in getting my hackles up, so I'll refrain from commenting. I agree with what you're saying.

Here in Sin City we see people just go all out to crowd to the front of the line and for what - once you get in there, there is plenty of whatever we are all going to receive, no reason to hurry or get all stressed about it. It's almost comical and I feel like asking them if it was worth it, but of course that would mean my stress level had to stay up in order to work up to that.

Re. the sales clerk's comment was rude and thoughtless. People who voice such thoughts are usually unhappy and strike out to make themselves feel superior. Small as I am I can look terrible in some things. Once hopsacking pants that should have been left in the closet were drooping and a really heavy woman in the subway said to me, "You can't wear pants like that." I said, "Look who's talking." The pants needed a cleaning. No more hopsacking for me.

This is probably true, Dottie. We are all stressed about having less
and worried about the future.

We're a friendly lot up here and I don't here or see much of that in this part of the country?

Life is not as simple as it once was. Too much stress, too many day-to-day pressures on people; but courtesy should never go out of style. There's a right way and a wrong way to say everything--including reminding the "line-cutters" that the line forms at the rear--not the front.

There is a "me first" mentality that has pervaded much of society. One of the things I do like about SW Florida is that many people down here are helpful and courteous.

I don't see your cruise ship incident as difference of opinion; I see it as pure selfishness, a failure to consider the rights of others. Line jumpers deserve to be lectured.

I can embrace difference of opinions, different religious views, political views and such. What I find intolerable though is a skewed sense of fairness.

I haven't seen much of this around here (yet); no riots in Wal-mart... I had (still have) Obama bumper stickers on the truck and no vandalism was attempted that I know of. On the other hand, maybe I manage to be in the right place at the right time, and miss this stuff.

This is the same problems on the airline.
People normally go from aisle to aisle in getting off.
This one man would not wait for a woman was reaching for her bad.
I looked at him and said.Wait for your turn.
Guess my bark was meant as he backed off.LOL.
Airline just as bad.Along with drivers.
This time of the year. They are all nuts.

Maybe as times get tougher, people feel more frustrated, and that is when the pecking order really kicks in. People tend to target those whom they feel are less powerful, or scapegoat entire populations for their woes. It is both sad and ugly, and I think your conclusion is right on target: we have to change this one person at a time.

The face of America has changed. The people, attitudes and
all phases. We don't live in the same place we used to.
And the change is all for the worse. Hate to say it, but I for
one don't like it. Have a good day, Larry

Well, I generally don't hate people based on color or points of view, but I do hate my job... I am quite intolerant of it.
