Today Betty, (Ted's cousin) and I went to see a lady who lives even farther into the country than I do. Her grandson was cleaning out her storage shed and found a button that had a flag on it and said, MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR FREEDOM AND JOBS. The date on it was August, l943. This was a big surprise to me, I thought things were better by l943. I was fifteen at the time and it seemed to me then that we were pretty well out of the depression.
He also found a butter churn that was crockery with a dasher for making butter and an old ice cream freezer. He thought the churn was for making buttermilk and didn't realize that was how butter was made. I always begged for the job of churning butter because I could read and churn at the same time.
He told us that there were somethings that dated back to l9l9. Naturally, I would like to dive in there and explore
further but I restrained myself, albeit with difficulty.
