Relics from the Past

Today Betty, (Ted's cousin) and I went to see a lady who lives even farther into the country than I do. Her grandson was cleaning out her storage shed and found a button that had a flag on it and said, MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR FREEDOM AND JOBS. The date on it was August, l943. This was a big surprise to me, I thought things were better by l943. I was fifteen at the time and it seemed to me then that we were pretty well out of the depression.

He also found a butter churn that was crockery with a dasher for making butter and an old ice cream freezer. He thought the churn was for making buttermilk and didn't realize that was how butter was made. I always begged for the job of churning butter because I could read and churn at the same time.

He told us that there were somethings that dated back to l9l9. Naturally, I would like to dive in there and explore
further but I restrained myself, albeit with difficulty.

What a marvelous find! I don't think you should restrain yourself. I also don't think they'd mind if you dug in and looked. How very interesting it would be!

There could be some really valuable stuff in there. I hope he doesn't throw any of it away.

How fun. Too bad you couldn't rummage around in there. If a person saves things, he's a packrat. If he tosses them, he's wasteful or has no foresight. I've been there.

You have some great memories, Jeri. In 1943 we were in the middle of the war. It was one of the worst years, before we got a handle on things. What kind of freedom was the button referring to? It reminds me of a guy (The U.S.) carrying a 1000 lb. load and a bunch of gnats (whiners and complainers) whirling around his head. There were plenty of jobs in war work and things for people not getting their heads shot off were getting better.

Nope the depression lasted longer then people think and the war actually helped pull the country out...

old things.
