Supposing it is L769

We would be busy preparing hasty pudding for our large family and outlining the days Christmas preparations. Dad and the boys would slog through the snow and get our Christmas tree. We would have had to make a lot of bayberry candles to use as lights for the tree, as well as for light at night. The children would have to pop corn over the fire place and string it and cranberries for tree decorations. All gifts would be home made. The boys would probably make wooden bowls for their Mom and the girls would dye homespun with poke berries to create caps and garments.

The drawing of water and the hewing of wood would take an enormous amount of time. If you were fortunate enough to have a bound girl or a bound boy, your chores would ease up somewhat. There would be a lot of animals to care for. Sheep for wool and cows for milk.

You would have learned that King George III had established Dartmouth College by royal charter, in Hanover, N. H. There would be rumors of dissatisfaction with Great
Britain for unjust taxation. You would be worried about your teen age boys going up against a royal army that would overwhelm them.

Every century is unique. I think the worst time to be alive was during the Civil War. The losses were immense on both sides. When we feel pressured and stressed perhaps we ought to remember the past.

In the winter they must have longed for the heat of summer. I'll bet their hands and feet were never quite warm, and their clothes never quite dry.

Good post. Apropos to what I'm now reading--Washington Irving. Life in the early 1800s. I'll take the present.

That's a great way to look at it. We think we have a lot of trouble today, but when you compare it with the work that had to be done in other eras, we have it really easy! I'm thankful for all our conveniences.

One year I found some walnuts near a pond and decided to use the husk to stain a few raw wood items I had laying around. The stain looked more beautiful than any store-bought kind, but it also stained my hands, the sink and everything else that it touched. I was literally weeks getting the stain off my skin and out from under my nails. Bet in 1769, without the advantage of modern chemical cleaners, my hands would never again have been the same!

Life was so hard back then; no wonder pictures taken of folks in the late 1800's show even the young women looking so worn out (men too.)

How do you make a wooden bowl? I don't know what is a poke berry. My worst fear is waking up in 1769 and realizing I have to walk through the snow to get to the outhouse. As for unjust taxation, just come live in Lee County where most of your taxes go for firehouses -- there is one for every 3 dwellings (exceeded only by the number of churches), and the fire trucks rush to answer medical calls, hoping to get there before the ambulance so they'll have something to do. There have been no fires since I've been here (2003). Them's me thoughts. I don't want to hear anymoe about NYC political corruption. At least in NYC, the pols brag about being crooked. Down here they go to church and preach goodness at you while robbing you blind. Pardon me for snarling.

It's 2008 and as poke berries are out of season, I'm going to dye my homespun with onion skins.

Who said "If you forget your past you are doomed to relive it? I hope you have a Merry Christmas full of good memories this year.
