A Day with Roman Art

Ted and I took off today to go the Oklahoma City Art Museum to see the exhibition from the Louvre. Today was a poor choice because the museum was full of school children since the exhibition closes Sunday. We were so glad to be able to see all the marble statuary and the sriking marble reliefs. The thing that struck us with awe was that almost anyone walking down the street could have modeled for the artist. The only differences were the coiffures and one statue had another of a hairdresser standing behind him doing his hair. Somehow, we had thought that they would have more aquiline noses and heavier features.

Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty was homely but Venus was lovely in all her portrayals. The one that interested me most was Antonious posing as Osires with an Egyptian head dress and the one of Nero who had ugly, pinched features and just looked mean. Ted was interested in Caligula because he spent money not unlike George W. Bush.

We ate at our favorite Mexican Place and did some recreational shopping. I got a new bedskirt for our bed and new ones for Ashley and Adrienne and a few gifts.
We enjoyed it all. We couldn't help but think the decline and fall of Rome just might happen to America.

Have a great weekend.

The similiarities between Rome's fall and ours is eerily similar--and equally frightening.

Well, if I was walking down the street I hope they wouldn't have grabbed me as a model for a naked statue. There's some things we all don't need to see.

Love your last line best of all. Can we fall? This is not like the Depression when we followed the world economy down the drain. This time we are pulling others down with us. Oh, I believe we will recover in the end, but it is going to hurt in the interim.

I love the comment about "Caligula"
Lucky you to have had a chance to view these close up.
Have a relaxing Sunday

I always felt bad for the visiting adults when I used to take middle schoolers to a museum. One likes to think a valuable teaching service has been done, but in watching those hyper kids run rampant all over, you wonder if you did the right thing. BTW, it's been 40 years since I was in the Louvre and saw most of what you described. Wonderful sculptures!

What a lovely way to spend the day. The terrorists couldn't have done a better job of bringing America to its knees than GWB and the right wing of the Republican party. We've got to climb out. I think we should have a mental/emotional test for anyone who wants to invest in the market. If you are a hysteric, you don't get to.
