Ugly Mess

This "week in review" has been packed with news from "the front". And it has been a battle zone!

The septic man finally (after several exhasperated phone calls) arrived to install my new system. This 100 yr. old farm house always drained my sewage into a field tile. Very effective until a major tile broke, somewhere down the line, and the county doesn't have the money to repair it. So my waste water couldn't escape. Hence, I was forced into remedy-ing the situation. Welcome to the 21st century.

Long story short: my back yard is one torn up dirty, muddy mess. We're talking at least 2000 sq. feet. The huge septic tank itself, an equally large "dosing" tank, and 8 50ft "fingers" occupy what was once my back yard. All my landscaping kaput. Small garden (I have two) gone. It's a bloody mess, and it kills me to look at it. Time will heal, but it still hurts. They're not done yet, either.

I'll have major work to do when they leave. My brick driveway (thousands of hand layed bricks) will need total resetting, due to their heavy machinery. Cleanup will take forever. And there's no sense in planting grass because he'll be back in 4 months to add and level more dirt, after this settles. Oh, the agony. Not to mention the expense! (Like $10,000)

Meanwhile, I'm picking raspberries (black and red)--some to eat, freeze, and give to my daughter to sell. Howing garden weeds and picking up the plethora of stones in the soil seems silly compared to the massive "howing" of my back yard!

I'm still golfing early each weekday morning, and running in the evening, before and after the heat of the day. I ran 6 miles before breakfast this morning (no weekend golf). I'm resting now before picking up limbs and sticks from 60+mph winds in last night's storm that passed through.

I might "take it easy" tomorrow on Father's Day! Ha, that's a laugh. Happy FD, all you fathers out there.

What a mess. But what has to be has to be. So sorry your yard and brick driveway were destroyed in the process.

And last night we got 4.5 inches of rain (according to my rain gauge)! Now it's really a muddy mess. I'm just sick.

Basic infrastructure MUST be attended to, or we all have to live in tents and pee on trees. And my only tree is in the front yard, so THAT won't work. Happy father's day.

I'm so lucky to have a HUGE outhouse--many private places to "hang out"! That's what makes it so infuriating--to have to abide by the laws of the land.

Well what can be said??? Good thoughts sent to you, and I'm impressed...
6 mile run, good for you.

Hi Ana. Nothing to be impressed about. I enjoy running.

I have been through some of the mess you describe. When our septic tank reached it's full potential, the county would not let us install another because my area has city sewerage. As long as the septic tank was in proper working condition, it was sorta "grandfathered" in but once it was no longer effective we had to go with city hook-up. The cost of sewerage actually doubled my water bill but that's how it goes. That was about 2 years ago and my yard still has not recovered from all the digging. They dug a trench from my house to the tap-in at the street and then the septic tank had to be emptied, filled with sand and recovered. I feel your pain.

Yes, I'm guessing it will be a good 2-3 years before my yard (and I) recover! Life goes on. Thanks for dropping by.

Happy Father's Day! I hope you get away from your house so you can stop stressing for a short time..

Thank you Kristi. It's nice to be "wished" a "Happy Father's Day", especially when two of my four children failed to do so (not that it's any big deal).

That's no fun, but I agree with whoever commented that the value of your home should go up considerably.
comment by jerms on June 19, 2010 5:11 PM ()
That's true, but at this point in my life, I really don't care about the "investment". With or without money, I consider myself very wealthy--certainly "blessed" (if you know what I mean).

We have city sewage. Ed says it was a factor in buying. Cape Coral residents were recently assessed $50,000 per household to defray the cost of installing sewers. Cape Coral is a bureaucrat's dream and a house owner's nightmare. They'd love to incorporate our island. We always vote against. They can go suck. I'm sorry you have to go through this. I'd hate to look at a mess for days on end. I hope the end result is worth it all.

"End results"--no pun intended?!

50+ YEARS I WAS SELLING 'TRACTS' TO CAPE CORAL FOR COMMISSIONS!!!
reply by greatmartin on June 21, 2010 7:41 AM ()
Congrats on getting that project out of the way, or mostly out of the way. This will add a lot more than $10,000 to the value of your house when you (or your estate) eventually go to sell it someday, plus the peace of mind you're going to have now when you do laundry, maybe decide to run that dishwasher, take a shower and flush the toilet all in the same day.

You always say the right things, Laura. This, too, shall pass. I can't believe I misspelled hoeing (howing?)! Yikes!
reply by solitaire on June 21, 2010 7:44 AM ()
Wow Did that turn out to be a major job- and a major expense! Happy Father's Day to you too!

I penny-pinch on one end so I can "treat" myself on the other. Although I'd really prefer to spend money on vacations and vehicles.

When we moved to th e farm, our septic tank only cost two thousand dollars.
I didn't realize they had gone up that much. The mess is horrific.
comment by elderjane on June 19, 2010 10:04 AM ()
It ain't cheap, that's for sure. What else am I going to spend my SS and pension money on?
reply by solitaire on June 21, 2010 7:39 AM ()
And that's 10,000 reasons I am glad I rent!!!
comment by greatmartin on June 19, 2010 10:00 AM ()
That day will come. I'll get my money back when (or if) I ever sell.

Thanks Fredo. It always turns out that it's my father that gets the "glory". Two of my own kids didn't make any contact with me. Oh well.
