Newspapers

We've all heard about the demise of today's daily newspaper. I'd hate to see it go. But:

I've been thinking about dropping my subscription. It's not the money ($250/yr).

It took me all of 15 minutes to read the whole paper while eating breakfast this morning.

I'm finding myself skimming or skipping altogether most stories. They are either insipid or do not interest me.

I mean, the paper includes world, national, and local news, but I'm sick and tired of reading about wars, deaths, politics, and what's happening in Lafayette or Purdue.

I don't care about sports anymore. I used to pour over "box scores". Now, I know nothing about the teams or players.

The "funnies" aren't. Obits depressing. It's just a waste of time and money. My only enjoyment is working the puzzles.

Yes, I want to be informed. And I feel guilty about skipping certain issues. But I get angry or sad or some other emotional thing as I peruse the daily gossip. But the sad truth is, I simply don't care. I used to need to keep informed when I taught school. Now, it just doesn't matter.

I think that's a bad sign, but that's how I feel. As soon as I get off "dial-up", I'll be able to get my news "fix" from the internet (speedier). It might be more difficult to eat my breakfast over a keyboard, but we'll see. PS: I'm not missing TV since I've all but cut it out.

https://games.aarp.org/ = AARP free games. I like the Spider Solitaire, but there are many different kinds.

Thank you!

My Dad gave up his daily newspaper a few years ago for the same reasons and hasn't looked back. He does, however, watch television news and listens to the news on the radio a lot.

I moved and can now have highspeed wireless Internet. I miss that dial up sound.

I'm with your dad. Eventually, I'll find the 20th century! I still own no cell phone or DVD player, etc. I'm an old-fashion liberal, a contradiction in terms (oxymoron).

I play the AARP free games online for my daily puzzles.

Next, I'll be needing a laptop to do puzzles on the sofa! Send me the AARP link.

You are LONG overdue for switching to cable or DSL! The Internet is an entirely different experience and you can get all of the news you need online. I have my 'homepage' set to a local news outlet. That way, I always catch the important headlines.I still think it is ironic that you espouse science, yet are the last to embrace advances in technologies.

Well, sometimes dial-up is "fast". Plus it only costs me $160 a yr. But the aggravation costs me far more! Besides, technology is not my kind of science (which is earth/natural). I'm updating someday. Didn't you promise not to be "critical" of me?

I use dial-up.
comment by crazylife on Sept 7, 2011 8:01 PM ()
As I said to Randy--I just got DSL this past January and it is another world--I regret not having done it a lot sooner--and , just think, it will give you so much more time for exercise!!!!

Dial up is archaic. Wallow in tech hell if you must. Meanwhile I hate the demise of hard copy not only because I grew up with it but because the atmosphere of a newspaper newsroom is like catnip to me. I mourn the closing of every newspaper no matter how small. So you don't like the news anymore -- that's you -- tired of same old same old. The newspapers didn't do that. They're just reporting it. Don't diss the messenger.

you can get most news on line, when you get going there and get rid of the dial up.That is all you need.Plus they also have cross words puzzle for you to play with. You also get a wealth of information.
Do it no and do it fast.Get rid of the dial up.

I'm listening. Read my reply to Martin.

I NEED my crossword and Jumble puzzle in the morning--need to get my mind awake! I like HOLDING the paper in my hand just like I prefer holding a book instead of ereading.

Get DSL--from a guy who gave up dial up in January and kicks himself in the butt for not having done it was sooner!

Oh, actually, cellular internet sticks are also an option here.
reply by crazylife on Sept 8, 2011 8:38 PM ()
Unfortunately, they only internet available where I live is dial up and satellite. Will eventually cave in and go satellite when the kids need internet access for school.
reply by crazylife on Sept 8, 2011 8:36 PM ()
I agree. I'd miss certain aspects. My dial-up subscription ends in March. 6 more months! Newspaper subs. ends in May. We'll see.

I just get the Sunday and Wed. editions. Adrienne loves the comics and
writes a comic strip just for fun.
comment by elderjane on Sept 7, 2011 7:15 AM ()
You'll have to post a blog on Adrienne's hobby to elaborate.

Google News and BBC America is where I skim news. I subscribe to the local paper to see who broke into whose house and who got busted by the cops or the sheriff for peddling drugs. - oh, and who not to vote for in the next election.
comment by jondude on Sept 7, 2011 7:11 AM ()
Don't care for any of that, either. I might miss the food and health section once a week.

Oh switch from dial up! I get the Sunday paper for the coupons. Ps I get lots of news from Facebook!
comment by kristilyn3 on Sept 7, 2011 5:49 AM ()
Coupons are another thing I seldom look at. Think of the paper (trees) I'm saving!
