Where Did They Go?

Yesterday, I laid out some hickory nuts to be cracked (in the basement). Today they're gone! I'm suspecting it's those darn little "piney" squirrels. I had a breeding pair and have seen the kiddies running around swiping my outside walnuts.
They must be getting indoors! Time to move my trap to the basement.

In my previous post I mentioned I decided to opt out of going to Florida this winter for my usual 2 week winter getaway. Serendipitiously (what, no spell check?), I checked my email before logging off, and lo and behold, my California son wrote a one sentence reply to my invitation to join me in a wilderness volunteer trip to Pinnacles N.P., about 50 miles from where he lives (Santa Cruz). He said "Yes"!

That means that instead of going to Florida, I'll be going to Calif. However, it will be at the end of April. It's more expensive, but worth the trade. I can also see daughter #2 (by age) (Oakland). Now, how did happen that I suddenly cancelled Florida right in the middle of hitting "send"? Luck? Intuition? ESP? Weird. (I opt for just plain luck.)

I realize most of my mybloggers friends are retired, but have a nice "hump day" anyway!

I don't have the same feelings for insects as I do for mammals and even reptiles. I always feel sorrow when I notice one has died badly. It has nothing to do with size. I killed a tiny gecko once, thinking it was a spider, and I felt terrible about it the whole day. I save geckos by covering them with a deep lid, sliding a cardboard underneath and carrying it out to the lawn. As they scamper away, I give them a lecture about coming into houses with cats.

I hear walnuts are $11 a pound!!!!

Try to solve problem without killing anything. Drop the second "i" -- it's serendipitous. It's great your son said yes. Hope it all works out. My pests are, as you might guess, large palmetto bugs. I just noticed they ate most of the bath salts in my dressing room drawer -- nibbled through the paper packet and made a mess. Have no remorse about offing them.

I guess "size matters", eh? It's alright to kill small creatures, but not larger ones? In general, I agree. But mice are considered small to me. I thought serendipitous looked wrong, the way I spelled it. Thanks.

PS I like the new avatar!

Stop using your kids as an excuse--they can handle the house moving on their own--bet it will get done if you aren't there!

I have other reasons, too. And what new avatar? I actually tried to post a new one, but "it" wouldn't let me (size problem).

The Pinnacles. Great pointed peaks slashing at the sky above the coastal range. You can see them when driving up Route 101, in the vicinity of some of the best wine country south of Napa. I wish I could join you.

Well, sign up! I understand the "work" involves condor study. How awesome is that?! Go to wildernessvolunteers.org , then "trips", and find Pinnacles in the list. Check it out. I've been up and down Calif., but never to Pinnacles. I just have to decide on how much time I want to spend in Cal. It's major garden time on the home front.

I had it with squirrels. They steal all the pecans while they are still
green. I have to make do with walnuts because they are better for you and
are not quite as expensive. However, it is difficult to tell the difference
in a pie. I found a mouse hole and put a brillo pad in it. I hope it killed
them. I haven't seen one ever and I don't have signs.

Two mice down and ? to go. About the pie: what do you mean you can't tell the difference in pecans and walnuts? I think they taste radically different!

Ha, sounds like when my dog's kibbles were disappearing. I found a pile of them inside a closet, in my shoe. Mice...

When I see your name--drmaus--it looks like "Dr. Mouse". If the shoe fits...!

Disappearing nuts is funny! LOL! California! Lucky you! I came within 100 miles of Calif while camping as a kid with my parents (was very miffed when we turned around!) and I've been in the LA airport, but that's as close as I got.

On my Vermont trip, we had a guy from Canada there. But he didn't have to travel as far as I did. You could do wilderness volunteer trips in the states if you wanted to. Glacier NP would be easy (which I've done and would do again). Got a passport?

I'm not going to say anything about your nuts. OW! OW! OW! Biting my tongue.

I was very careful in avoiding double meanings in my post. Naughty naughty, Marge!

April! Long time to wait. I have come to rely on those coincidences, so I no longer ##### the way I used to when things don't go as *I* think they should. I dislike procrastination, but I did it one night when we were selling a trailer that the ole lady owned. I just didn't feel like calling the guy back. Next morning another prospective buyer called and we sold to them for a thousand more than I was ready to accept the night before.

One of my favorite "isms" is "Wise men change their minds, fools never do". I still may change my mind and go to Florida. Last minute decisions ofter work out just fine. And yes, April is a good 5 months away!

I had mice moving pet food around the basement and kitchen. Kibble appeared in a sewing machine drawer and in a cabinet. Who knows how long before I found it. Both were places I never looked.
comment by boots586 on Nov 9, 2011 2:10 PM ()
Oh the stores of food--even dried up mice--I've found over the years. And those are just the ones I've discovered! I bet I've killed a thousand mice over the years.
reply by solitaire on Nov 10, 2011 5:01 AM ()
Mice perhaps? We keep the cat's food up on his own table so the mice won't steal the dry food and hide it in the dish towel drawer. Very exciting that you are going to do something with your son next April!
comment by troutbend on Nov 9, 2011 1:10 PM ()
Yes, mice. I caught one overnight (see reply to Dottie). My son is somewhat flaky with little ambition. I'm just afraid he'll back out. Otherwise, I'm psyched!

I prefer coincidence!!!

Why not both? Florida in the Winter and California in the Spring? Don't you deserve it?
comment by greatmartin on Nov 9, 2011 7:48 AM ()
I did both last year (2010) when I did Hawaii and Florida. It about broke the bank. At least I thought it did (of course, it didn't). But like I said, there are several other reasons for not going, namely my kids and their pending house moving.

How perfect. I love it when things just work out!!!

Think that is funny about your nuts disappearing. Squirrels in the house is not a good thing.
comment by dragonflyby on Nov 9, 2011 6:38 AM ()
Since I caught a mouse overnight, I'm thinking he was the culprit. Still, a hickory nut is a pretty big item to haul off for a mouse!
