Localisms

It's a gloomy, wet day in rural north-central Indiana. I'm not sure what my plans are. I have bigger concerns and decisions.

#1:
Already this morning, I wrote an acceptance to rent my Florida vacation house that I've stayed in for two weeks the past 2 years in late January, early Feb. Then, for some strange reason, I suddenly changed my mind and deleted the message before I hit "send"! Perhaps it's too early to think about winter in Florida. Plus, there are other extenuating circumstances.
If the place is still available later, I can re-decide.

#2
Yesterday, I drove down (45') to see my daughter Emily, Nate and Little Johnny. I played with my grandson some. But mainly, the trip was to talk about "The Big Plan".

As I've mentioned before, Nate and Emily want to move their farm market operation to my farm land (now in cash rented corn and beans). I'm all in favor of this--actually excited about the prospect!

Here's the scoop, as briefly as I can put it. They have secured the old farm house they want--FREE for the taking! Just fill in the hole. However, they have to move it two miles to the farm. They need a foundation, drive, well, barn, etc., etc. And they don't have the money.

They can get a loan or mortgage if they have land equity. So, they've asked me if I would "sell" or gift them a minimum of 15 acres (out of 120). I balk at saying yes, the risk being I could lose it. But then again, when I'm dead, it won't matter, will it? I have no need for it. They'll likely inherit the whole farm anyway. So I said yes.

I may have to loan them more money until they get the bank to fork over mortgage money. Another sleep depriving risk!
But I've always been somewhat of a risk taker, so what the heck. Next step is go to my lawyer to discuss the idea and transaction. And hope the zoning commission approves the house location. Plus, I need to change my will. Ugh.

Nate would like to move the house this winter, across fields, over frozen farm ground. But a foundation is necessary first. So this is why I think it's best I stay at home all winter to oversee this whole operation. Besides, the cost of renting a vacation home would be better served spent on surveyer and attorney fees. Priorities and reason dictate.

My father will be kept in the dark about all this. He's already expressed his negative viewpoint. While I respect his caution, I disagree with his pessimism. I'm excited about the prospect of the whole "shootin' match"! And a 5' drive from my house to their's will be snap.
Wish us all luck.

It's a nice thought of family farms continuing, but I share elderjane's thought for your other kids, your son too. Sounds like your daughter has your industriousness.

I just now saw your comment. Yes, I've been chewing this all over and over again. With my oldest daughter home from Honduras, this will be a topic to discuss. Her husband will inherit a farm, so I don't worry about them. I DO want to be equitable.

I think you're doing the right thing, all of it. It's exciting to find a house to move that would otherwise get torn down, just have them make sure it is structurally worth moving and the county or whomever will issue a certificate of occupancy once it's in place, not come up with a bunch of obstacles.

I'll take a picture of the house soon to show you. It's old and ugly, but structurally sound, according to Nate. And very nice on the inside. Old two story farm house, I'm guessing 1890's, maybe older! And thanks for the tip in your last sentence.

Sometimes you just have to listen to your inner voice. Being on hand is probably a good thing-maybe not for your blood pressure. Is there a building moving company near you? That can be expensive. Going over fields is good. No power lines to relocate.

Nate is checking out house moving possibilities. He has lots of "friends in high places". Cost may be under 5k. And the option to move the house across fields eliminates power lines, true. I have complete confidence in Nate and the whole scheme. "What, me worry?"

If you feel good about it, that's the way to go. I only have kitties to drain my resources and use up my physical stamina cleaning up after them. Seems to me like a decent trade.

Much less to lose sleep over! Sorry to ramble on about my kids. I hate when I do that.

I have always tried to stsy out of my kids lives to the extent that I can
and now that I live three blocks away, I enjoy it. I help them when they
need me but would never go the extent to which you are going. You have a
lot of living yet to do and may need money for your own needs. You will live
a long time with your healthy life style and do not short the other
kids or you will cause a lot of ill feeling amongst them.

I'm not worried about my future. I will make sure I have enough money to live my life out on. Besides, my needs are small. Also, I'm not strict on trying to be fair to all my kids. Some deserve more than others. Ambition goes a long way with me. My son has absolutely none--and never will. You reap what you sow. Fairness is what I deem.

I hope it turns out well for all of you.

That makes two of us! I'm 90% confident it will.

Just for the record--very low humidity--a lot of sunshine--breezy--high of 82 and low of 75--what I call perfect tourist weather.
Where is Florida do you stay?
'to oversee this whole operation.' Is this another way of saying 'being bossy--telling the kids what to do'?
comment by greatmartin on Nov 7, 2011 7:36 AM ()
Perhaps I should have said "help with the operation". I'm letting them do all the dirty work. I just make suggestions--never bossy! I've been going to the Panhandle--Mexico Beach, Port St. Joe area east of Panama City 30 miles. Very quiet and uncrowded (which I've written about). And for you information, today's weather here is sunny and 68!!!!! Ha!

I wish you all luck!!! I am happy you are excited for the kids.
