WEST COAST BABY BED PROJECT
What are these Baby Beds?

image

Baby Beds are new parent starter kits that contain quality infant products as well as important information about continuing care and support programs for both mother and child.

Each Baby Bed is outfitted with a custom, certified non-toxic mattress so that it can be used safely as a bassinet.

When the supplies come out, these double as a safe place for baby to sleep.

Newborns sleep in the beds for their first few months. Then they are great for storage or keepsakes.

Every baby born at WCGH will be offered this wonderful gift for free. Every baby is potentially susceptible to SIDS regardless of the family's socioeconomic status and we want to reduce their risk!

A recent BC Coroner's Service Alert highlighted an increase in Infant Deaths due to unsafe sleep practice. In the previous 3 years, there have been an average of 18 related infant deaths per year. This year in just under 4 months (January1st to April 28th)15 infants have died in BC. Six of these baby deaths occurred on Vancouver Island. We want to reduce our baby’s risk of SIDS.

I want to know who's paying for this? We can't afford to hire more nurses to staff our hospitals but we can give away large cardboard boxes full of goodies for new and expectant mothers??? Where is the money coming from to pay for these "FREE" baby beds? This may sound a tad cold hearted but any parent who uses "unsafe sleeping practices" (eg: face down on a water bed, in the same bed with sleeping mommy and/or daddy) should be sterilized.

I know this is common practice in Scandinavia. It is also being spoken about in Scotland to try and introduce it here. I think actually giving new mothers useful items is better than vouchers etc. That can be the case here as part of the benefits system in Britain.

I'm sure the boxes won't cost a great deal and I'm sure the pharmaceutical companies help a bit to stock them. If they don't hey should.
