Youth and Age

Yesterday my son and I were discussing the relative merits of youth and age. This is what we came up with. When you are young you are more open to new ideas, have a lot of energy, your mental prowess is at its peak and you are replete with good looks and health.

When you are old you are more comfortable with yourself, more preoccupied with what you can give rather than what you can get. You have had more life experiences to help you deal with concerns and you can read the human heart much better.

I haven't named nearly all of the advantages to both states of being. However, I can tell you this. I am happier and more content than I have ever been in my whole life. I mourn the fantastic wells of energy that I used to have but have learned to make a better use of what I have left. I have lost somethings along the way but I find that I don't miss them. I have gained a lot in patience and understanding. And I want to live at least ten more years!!!

According to a science podcast I listened to about a year ago, listening to new music is one way to keep our attitudes young. NPR's Charles Krulwicz on Science said that most of us stop being open to new music in our early 20s. Since then, I've been downloading the freebies on iTunes every week and I actually like some of them? Here's a link: https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5652676

Good post. I still refuse to even consider the fact that I'm getting there. However, my body often tells me otherwise.

I am definitely more comfortable with myself now. Too comfortable in fact, because I have blamed being over weight on age on more than one occassion, despite age not being the strongest factor.

Yes, you must quit smoking so you can have a long life AFTER RETIREMENT.
Take good care of your health Sweetie. It is one of the most precious things we have.

What a wonderful assessment of the virtues of youth and aging. What you said is so very true since I can attest to the changes in physical, emotional and spiritual qualities that aging brings.

The thing I miss most as I age is my emotional resilience. My people losses sometimes overwhelm me and the animal losses are right up there with the rest. Yes I understand more and I know how to stay happy most of the time and I deal with people better. But, make no mistake, I would happily be 30 again. Or even 50.
